I recently acquired a really nice Mossberg 500 ATP. I have been looking for info on the history of this model shotgun. I called Mossberg and all they say is its an older model similar to the 500a. I am new to this site so ill post pics as soon as I figure this out...lol.

Btw does anyone know where I can find info on this rifle?

The "A" in Mossberg nomenclature has always designated 12 gauge ("B" = 20 gauge, etc.). The ATP is a 12 gauge Model 500 shotgun set up in a basic military/police configuration. As I recall, it was one of Mossberg's first guns dedicated to a service shotgun role....this was before the 590 series. Just a guess now: 12 gauge tactical police??? I had one at one time. Good shotgun...wouldn't mind having another.

You might try to contact Mossberg if you want a real definitive answer.

Does anyone else have one?

Does anyone else have one? Got pics? Is it possible to change the magazine tube?

Mag tube should be threaded and screwed in...

May require stripping action and placing in oven to heat up any loctite used.

It is a thin material so care must be taken as to where and how to use vises or clamps...

The 500ATP was Mossberg's version of what was referred to by most in the 1970's as a Riot Gun - short bbbl ( 18"-20", FC, front beaqd sight only - meant for buckshot.

The usual procedure was to fire a buckshot load into the pavement/ground, just in front of the rioters, so the load would pick up additional projectiles in the form of dirt/gravel/whathaveyou.

I believe TXGun has the correct answer. I have one which was a former Alabama State Trooper gun. It has a 20in barrel and and 8 round magazine.

It was in relatively good condiiton when I bought it, and I sent the barrel to Mossberg for a $35.00 factory reblueing. Now, it looks like new. I use it as my primary home defense gun.

I also like the fact it has wood furniture.

Just got my ATP

Got this one from a guy who never fired it. Mint condition except for believe it or not the dang safety broke while in the box!

It has rifle sights and a smooth barrel. 7+1. The serial number starts with H. I sent email to Mossberg but no reply yet
