Hello, you guys have been very helpful.I need to bother you all one more time.My brother has an old shotgun it's a winchester 97?I THINK??It's a pump action 12 ga. with an exposed hammer. What the hell kind of cockeyed setup is this?My brother has fired it and it seems to work fine. What is the value of this gun? What does 97 stand for a year maybe? It has a 20 in. barrel if that helps any?Are these good guns?IE:well made?easy to find parts if you need them?Or is it one of those great guns that almost never break with normal use and care?As always thanks for any help.

The Winchester 97 is a John Browning design, and a classic. It was the first decent pump on the market and made from 1897 to the 1950s.

Like its descendant, the Model 12, it can be fired by holding the trigger back and pumping the action, every time the bolt closes the piece will fire.

And, like all Browning designs, it is overengineered, and will last well nigh forever. However, some have been abused, or worked on by idiots, so getting it checked out by a qualified smith makes good sense, like any old firearm.

Finally, if your brother just can't stand having it in the house for another minute, let me know(G)....
