old winchester .22

Shooters,

I have two old Winchester single shot semi-automatic .22s from my childhood, about 55 ago.

I believe they are Model 55 if my memory serves me and they are not here for me to pull out and see.

They load one round at a time and immediately go on safe when a round is loaded in the top of the receiver, and eject empties out the bottom automatically.

Anyone know their worth?

The Winchester 55 fires from an open bolt, so Winchester got some grief from ATF over making this rifle. There is not a lot of interest in them other than they are Winchesters. They can bring $300-$400 in good shape.

Obviously, because they can be converted into a machinegun IF the user is very, very fast with the fingers! ;)

Yes, that is exactly why, the ATF was afraid it could be fitted with a magazine that would allow full auto operation. Regardless of the obstacles that would prevent virtually anyone doing so.

It is a little surprising how fast the model 55 can be cycled loading one at a time. I seem to remember a contest to see what could shoot a box of fifty faster the 55 or a Ruger 10-22 with a single rotary magazine. If only the 55 had a little better accuracy, they might have been more popular. I took mine on my last camping trip as a utility rifle.

I got a Winchester 77 semi auto 22 52 years ago.
It worked until I got sand in it.

I shot a 19 pound raccoon today with a pump 22 Win 61 made in 1955.
That is a great gun.

Anything like this one, Clark?

(The made in England HBC trade blanket is much older than the rifle).

That is a magazine fed. I had a tube feed. My father got it wholesale through a buyer where he worked, Pac Car Renton.

I think that Winchesters were franchised and i could not get a deal on them, but the model 77 was being surplused or something.

I was 12 years old. I probably sold it when I was 19.
