Love these old photos showing the leather that was used in the era. What can you add to the thread???

My particular interest is the period from the civil war until just before the arrival of the metallic cartridge, although all photos of the old west depicting leather are welcome.....

Berdanss.. Loved the photo of Captain Richardson, But I do have to ask, Is that a leopard skin...??? Or What material is that made of..

I have to say that if you wear that today some may take that as a bit of a life style choice...

A big +1 on the book "Packing Iron" - if you don't have it . . . . like gun leather . . . then this book is a "must have". I keep a copy of it in my reference books above my leather working bench. It is usually available on Amazon.com.

@ Idaho Mike,

Can you build a double shoulder holster that will hold two 1862 police pistols (the fat 6-shot ones) high enough they won't bang into the holstered pair????

I suppose its possible 10851. Im thinking they would have to pretty high up in the ol' armpit. A person could wear 2 crossdraws on the belt a little further forward to help get some clearance for those in the shoulder rig.

Were waiting for one too. A while back I devised a sturdy dual loop system that will allow 4 carry angles (strongside no cant, strongside rear cant, crossdraw no cant or crossdraw forward cant) which may be something to think about. Ive kept one holster with those loops for myself. The forward cant crossdraw is the best position in my opinion with that loop system.

Shoulder leather

Had a guy from WA State make this for me for my ROA. It was designed from a picture of "The Pinkertons" chasing Jesse James. I'm right handed, so this hangs over the left shoulder. I personally love it. Have not trimmed the excess off yet but it's designd to fit anyone.

It fits my 58 Rem as well!

I am toying with this. I carried a pair of 1911's in a Miami Classic for many years and it was very comfortable, but that's horizontal carry.....:D

Thank you Birch! I am always humbled by folks' compliments.
@10851, for years Ive wondered about a quad Doc Holiday. 2 down around belt level and 2 up closeer to the armpits. Not sure how practical Itd be, but itd look pretty spiffy.

I am planning for that sort of thing based on having (4) matching 1862 Police .36's , the belt we originally discussed with double flat-top butt-forward holsters, dual cap boxes and maybe now cartridge loops in the back for an upcoming 1873 Winchester purchase.

Can you sketch your concept????
