Old Thread on reloading shotshells for revolvers

I could have swore that I saw a great post on this forum a few years back about a member here making shotshells for this revolver. It included an under shot wad, overshot card, and a heavy crimp to hold it together. Anybody have a link to that post? I can't seem to find it with the search tools here.

You is right and as I remember it the Staff member might be along shortly. I am lazy I use the Speer shot capsuls for .44 and .38 and have even shortened the .38 capsuls fer .38 S&W.

I made some 38s last year. I used cards cut from a Lee mold box, two over the powder and one over the shot with just a little crimp and topped off with fingernail polish.

They took several snakes.

I've made them for .357's in the past, but only do .41 Mag now. It's a bit of work, but nobody makes one that's legal to hunt with, so it kinda forces my hand.

Trim 30-30 cases to fit flush with end of cylinder.
Run top 5/8" of case into .40 S&W sizing die.
Chuck case into cordless drill (case mouth first), thin rim using file and sandpaper.
Turn down diameter of rim using file and sandpaper.
Primer, powder, over powder wad, shot load (5/8 oz. #8), cover with nail polish (no over shot wad).

Speer used to make the plastic pellet holders - don't know if they still do. I loaded up some 38s. Pattern was what was to be expected from a rifled barrel - good for about 5-7 FEET using 8s or 9s.

I have said this before on the boards (it may be ion one of those two threads)...

My patterns vastly improved when I stopped using the capsules and backed off on the charges listed on the boxes...

I get more shot weight, and better patterns just using .357 and .44 mag cases...

The Speer shot capsules can allow you to have a larger payload of shot.

The best patterning pistol shot loads I have made are my 45 acp loads using .410 wads.

In my experience, the shot capsules resulted in lower payloads in .38/.357 and .44 Mag. (Even with 60% of the capsule outside of the case.)
The capsule itself just takes up too much volume.

Going to an over-powder wad, a small cushion wad, and an over-shot card nearly doubles the payload capacity.

IIRC with the 45 cal capsules I get around 750 #12 shot in each one.

Out of revolvers you can cheat your way into getting a lot more payload though, without them.

Yep.

(.44 Mag)

I donated some .30-30 to Crankylove to use for .41 Mag. And, more recently, Crankylove and Cornbush used some well-worn, pressure-gun .444 Marlin for .45 Colt. (Substantial piston ring imprint in the case, even after many reloads.)
