Old shotgun cleaning

I have a Bridge Gun Company Black Prince in .410, mine is made by H&R. I'm wanting to clean up the nickel plated receiver. The nickel isn't in bad shape but it's showing it's age. Will chrome polish work? Or is there something better? I'm also going to refinish the wood. I'm gonna use red oak stain and then use about 4-5 coats of poly tinted red, and then a few coats of clear poly. The blueing on the barrel is in excellent shape. It's gonna look great when finished. Any help would be appreciated.

Flitz is a nice abrasive polisher, but it might be too much on something like an old finish you mentioned.
A mild cleaner with vinegar and water might be worth a try first before something that removes the finish
