old serial numbers

I have an old rusted rifle that I'm trying to identify. It's a rolling breechblock with "US Model 1873" printed on top. On the side of the receiver is "US Springfield" The bore measures .45 Cal. Due to rusting, I can't find any more markings. Where do I look for the serial numbers. AND, Is there anything special I should know about this piece. Any suggestions would be apppreciated. Thanks Bill G.
