S&W- 5 screw ? 4 on side plate, 1 in top front of trigger guard.
# 5741xx under barrel
Barrel number is on bottom of barrel above the cylinder base pin.
the number on bottom of grip is the 574( rest is rusted out).
48584 in yoke area
Rear cylinder number 5741xx
Left side of barrel marked "SMITH & WESSON."
Right side of barell marked" S&W SPEICAL CTG"
MADE IN (rusted out) on right front side.
38 special fits cylinder. (cant read cal. bad pitting)
The grips are checkered walnut with a diamond around the screw.
Bore is good and the gun locks up tight.
I need 2 of the side plate screws(top and back) but know nothing about the older Smiths.

Hmmm.. hard to tell with that photo, but...

Check for a serial number stamped on the bottom of the grip frame.

48584 in yoke area - if that's the s/n it would be a M&P, 1902 1st Change model, .38 special.

5741xx under barrel is unlikely to be the serial number, but more like an assembly ID number. If this is the s/n, it's a S&W M&P 1905 4th change.

Definitely a Hand Ejector S&W. I think it is a Model of 1905 4th myself. You could safely use 158 gr CAS lead ammunition if a gunsmith approves. Those grips look plain, my guess is that they were checkered walnut at one time. They don't look well fitted to me. Was it sunk at sea? The finish does seem worse for wear.

Barrel number ?

Sheepdip:
That is not the barrel number under the extractor it is the serial number ! That is a spot S&W used to place them also. There should be numbers on the cylinder rear where it is loaded and in the crane area where the cylinde rest's against the frame.. Also a word of "CAUTION" make sure your revolver is the newer up-dated hardened frame before firing "ANY" new style ammo in it to prevent from blowing a cylinder !!!! Regards, Hammer It.

Sir William,
The grips are checkered walnut with a diamond around the screw.
Fit is good, may just be the picture.
I don't think it was sunk at sea but may have been left on deck to long.

It seems to have poor fitting grips in the picture. It also seems to be a brother to my own 6". It is a 38 Special chambering. Mine is very accurate with Black Hills and PMC 158 gr lead CAS cartridges. It is a K frame, pre-M&P that then became the Model 10.

The 574xxx serial number makes it out to be a Model 1905 4th Change Hand Ejector. It should have a heat-treated cylinder, however I would be reluctant to fire it with anything but the mildest of ammo -- and only after an inspection by a competent gunsmith.

The rust-outs concern me from a safety issue. If rusting is deep enough to obliterate the serial number stampings and other markings, one wonders about other damage to the steel that isn't as obvious. Also, the condition of the action, especially cylinder timing & lock-up should be confirmed before shooting this gun.

You might be able to find screws & other parts for it by contacting Gun Parts Corp (formerly Numeric Arms) or via their website http://www.gunpartscorp.com/. You may have to call them and ask what other parts will fit from more recent guns (they can often tell you). Good folks with a good reputation.

Hammer It,

Thanks for the educational briefing on the under-barrel serial number.
I'm not as familiar with the nuances of the older (pre-war) models as I am with the later ones. But I'm learning thanks to folks like you!
