Old Ruger 10/22 upgrade

I can get my hands on an old cheap Ruger 10/22. I want to upgrade the rifle with a better receiver barrel etc. Do modern components fit on older 10/22’s or are there different generations of the 10/22 that would prohibit me from fitting new parts to older guns?

Thanks,

Fred.

I have an older 10/22, also, and the only major difference I'm aware of is between the .22LR and .22 Magnum versions. A both are clearly marked.

I have upgraded more of these than I care to admit and the differences in each generation should not effect what you are trying to do. Now, if you have the older "finger grooved" model, I'd leave it as is and convert a newer one. Usually, you can pump more money into one, than you can get out of them, if you sell. These 10/22's, are great to tinker with. There is not a single part, that can't be upgraded. ....... :)

If you replace the receiver, it may not be as good as the old one, unless you spend big bucks to get a third-party receiver. You could have the old one refinished, or just paint it yourself. You'd need to go through a FFL dealer to get a receiver of any kind.

That reminds me about the guy who still had his grandfather's ax. He said he replaced 6 handles and 2 heads, but it was still the same ax! Right.

if you want to replace the receiver and barrel why even buy a base rifle? buy the 10/22 and then do a custom build on the side. then you have two separate rifles.

Yes, same gun.

That's all there is to the rifle, receiver, barrel, stock. Ever heard the old saying "lock, stock, and barrel"? Refinish the receiver, replace the rigger components, get a new barrel, put a new stock on it. Not much else you can do and still have it be the same rifle you started with (okay, you can put ventilated handguard, barrel shroud, extended mag release, hi-cap mag, accessory rails, etc, and you can get just plain silly if you want).
