Old revolver help needed

My Dad lives in Texas and is a bigtime history buff. I thought about getting some sort of 'cowboy' revolver for him but have no clue what to look for. I'm not looking to spend a whole lot on it, just something to put a smile on his face at the range.

I looked at the Ruger SA's but they're running well over $400 on average.

How bout a historical replica?

How about one of the SAA clones or one of the replica "cartridge conversion" Colt revolvers? That is pretty historical. Or for a lot less, you could get a blackpowder revolver replica, one of the good brands, I would recommend you check out Uberti for best quality first. Not as practical as the Ruger, but with one of the .44 cal bored guns, it can pack a wallop! And then you could clean it up after firing and hang it on the wall for display! No crook is gonna steal it and shoot someone with it-they are too stupid to figure out how to operate one! Old Colt replicas sure fit in to Texas history!

Geeze, if he is into Texas, get a Colt Walker! It is about as steeped in Texas tradition as any revolver out there. Come on, they were made for the Rangers!

Uberti's are running right around 300$ brand new!

(I am going to get one for my Texas born daughter soon. As the saying goes, "I weren't born in Texas but I got here as quick as I could"

Those Uberti's look pretty good. I've never shot one like that, how does the recoil of 45LC compare to 45ACP? I like the idea of the ACP cylinder for cheaper shooting.

Depends on which 45 Long Colt cartridge you use. There are insane loads and CAS loads with quite a spread in recoil. Mild to wild.

Alright, here's another question then.

I found a Ruger Blackhawk in 45lc/45acp that might do the trick as it's under $400. If I were to give it to him for Fathers Day, how does that work legally and also taking it back on the plane to TX?

I know in Mississippi you can legally buy a gun as a gift for anyone (immediate family) you know would pass the background check. You can not buy a gun for someone that you don't know, or that you are aware of an instance that they would fail a background check, this is what is called a "straw buy" why that name you got me. I am assuming it would be this way where you live also. As far as the plane ride I am sure there is some sort of protocol you need to follow as far as checked baggage goes. Nowadays I would not go on what I have read or seen on the internet. I did read an article the other day showing the different charges that will be brought against someone in this situation and they were not showing any leniency in the “I'm sorry I didn't know category”. This being the case I would call the airport and find out the proper way to do this; also I would try and get the names and titles of everyone that gave me the info... Just my 2 cents

I talked with a guy at the gun store and he said it would have to be shipped to a FFL in TX...which is fine with me so he doesn't have to deal with the mess of transporting it.

I've got another possible on a consignment Blackhawk 45LC with spare 45acp cylinder here on friday. I didn't care for the action on the Uvarti, but the Ruger is extra smooth. The 'old' Vaquero is definitely beefier than the new one.

I guess it's not as good as giving a gift, but why not just send your dad a check for $400 and tell him to go buy what he likes. Change is his, and if he wants something more expensive he can either pay the difference or ask you for more money.

That is a lot easier and cheaper than having a VA dealer ship the gun to a Texas dealer or trying to carry it on an airplane.

You know you are asking the wrong people. Why not ask him? You are buying it to put a smile on his face right? If he's deeply involved in history then your $400 price range may not get you anywhere near close to what he wants.
Remember when buying for someone else it's best to know what they want if you want to please them. He may not want a clone or replica. He also may not want a cartridge gun, but instead a black powder percussion revolver.

Geeze, if he is into Texas, get a Colt Walker! It is about as steeped in Texas tradition as any revolver out there. Come on, they were made for the Rangers!
I think that you are thinking of the Patterson

Bud's Gun Shop has a bunch of Ruger Single Actions, Vaquero, Blackhawk, etc; listed in the mid $300's.

I just paid $300 for my like new in box Vaquero.

Good Luck in your search...

If it's mostly a historical/charm thing, I'd go with the Uberti as several mentioned--in .45 Colt, or (less common but still excellent caliber) .44 Special of the big bores. As a "practical/ ranch/trompin" or SD gun, Ruger. If you really want to go "historical feeling/looking" check out the Uberti-made EMF and Cimarron--and maybe a few others (maybe Uberti itself) SAA clones with the old or antiqued finish; adds a little $ but not tremendously so, and sure gives the old sense in a new/modern revolver.

Carriin a gun on a airline

There is no problem packing a gun in a bag on the airlines.Just tell them its in the bag and fill out a silly lil form.DONT PACK ANY AMO IN THE SAME BAG!!!

Chrisinva: I'd buy that convertable Ruger for myself and get your dad some cash. Take him shopping and let him pick what he wants. He may have some definite ideas of his own.Saves you from "importing" a handgun, and I'm sure it'd be a good way to spend an afternoon or two in good company, a priceless gift.

FWIW, the my .45LC/.45ACP Ruger Vaquero is the best money I spent in a long time - I carry it frequently.
