I was given an old Remington, can not find a model # on it. Serial j 255074. The gun has two levers and a hammer, one when pushed forward will release the barrel, the second can be pulled back to load one 22 lr after the hammer is cocked. Never seen one. Any ideas? Thanks for your help and big thanks for all I have learned from this forum.

There should be 2 letters stamped on the left side of the barrel near the receiver. The 1st letter is the month, 2nd letter is year. The years repeat. For example, "L" is for 1920, 1942, 1964, 1991, and 2017.

Normally you can figure out the year pretty easily by looking at other features.

This isn't perfect, but may help.

Remington Rolling Block Model No 4. Calibers .22, .25, and .32 rimfire.
Over 50,000 made 1890-1933 but takedowns like that only after 1900.

CAUTION: It looks like the hammer screw is missing, backed out, or broken off. Since the hammer is all that holds the breechblock shut, this is a safety issue.

Big thanks to all. I can not tell y'all how much I have learned from this forum. Hope to look at restoring when I can get caught up on others items first.
