Old Reloaded Shells?

My Grandfather gave me an older model shell reloaded, powder and all the gear to reload shells.
He also gave me 50 reloaded shells that he thinks are around 10 years old. I dont know if they are any good. The shells physically look fine, brass is tanrished, but no defects on the primers or plastic.
Would you try them or toss them?
 
If you trust your grandfather's loading ability, the shells should function just fine. The question, as with all reloads, is "Just how careful was Gramps when he loaded those babies up?" If he followed a published recipie using the components called for by the recipie, the shells should work. Age alone, given lack of floods, fires, and pestilence, should not deteriorate shells only ten years old.

You might want to wear a welding mask and gloves when you shoot the first few off :eek:

No, they should be fine if loaded properly. 10 years isn't too long if stored correctly.

There should be no problem with them at all. Just be alert for an unusual sounding discharge of any of the shells. I once recoil firing one, and it went "pop". I pulled the barrel off the 870 and there was the wad half way down the barrel. Nasty.

As always, wear eye protection. :cool:

I have no problem with my own reloads as they age. I don't even think of them as old. On the other hand given 50 I might pull one down and also sniff the powder.
 
$5 worth of components in those 50 rounds. Cut the hulls, save the shot, pitch the rest. Then there is nothing to worry about and nothing that can go wrong.

Not to pick on your Gradfather, but most of the reloading accidents and problems I have personally witnessed have been senior citizens, and most of them have been near the end of their reloading/shooting careers. Thank goodness most of them use quality guns. The record was one old guy, sharp tongued old codger of a WWII vet that left a leg somewhere in the pacific, had THREE double charges in one round of skeet. His Citori took it in stride, it didn't knock him down but was close, and shortly after that he lost the health needed to get out and shoot. All that said he was one of the more pleasant squadmates a guy could shoot with, and we miss him at the club.....
 
So, moving from PB to real firearms huh? :D

I think I've played a grand total of 3 games after obsessing over various firearms. I just wish the current crop of ballers would knock it off with the hyperactive electro's.
