I got a few pounds each of winchester western 571 and 540ms. All the cans are full and seen to be in good shape, no funny smells, no odd colors etc. Im gonna try a few rounds to be doubly sure, and if they are good to go Ill shoot em up. So, anyone have any older loading manuals that have the powders included? Namely I'd like to use them for 38/357 and maybe 9mm.

Winchester 571 is reputed to be the same powder as Hodgdon HS-7. I have some of both. I can't tell them apart by looks or actual performance, so I think it's true. Simply outstanding powder in the 45 Colt to give maximum velocity within standard pressure and flexibly goes well beyond for Blackhawk owners. Sadly, both have been discontinued. I hope Hodgdon bring it back. It's probably the one powder I would buy, even though I am otherwise well supplied with a variety of other propellants.

I think 540 was the same as current HS-6. My coffee hasn't kicked in so maybe I have my Winchester numbers mixed up. If I'm right, I even used it back in the day - and HS-6 currently. There's lots of HS-6 data available.

Thanks for the links guys, I used that ol winchester manual to gind a fitting load for the 540 powder in 38 special and its perfect. Loaded up 50 and shot em yesterday, rigght on the money. Now to get busy on the progressive, gonna fill a 30 cal can.

Thanks again!
