Old Gun needs New Barrel

This may be a stupid question, please forgive my ignorance.

My father has a Winchester Model 12 Shotgun that he purchased around 1957-59. He would like to use this gun again, but our laws state that we must use steel shot and he is worried that he will ruin the gun etc.

Does anyone know if you can get an after-market barrel for this gun that can use steel shot?

Here are the details:
Winchester Model 12 Pump Action Shotgun
12 gauge, 2-3/4"
Circa 1957-1959
Markings: Model 944 s/n 1800944F

thank you in advance for any information or recommendations.

Best regards,

Darren

Daren, I would get a copy of Blacks Wing and Clay. Look in the gunsmith area of the book. there are several gunsmiths who still work on Model 12's and at least one who can make a barrel for you.

The old Model 12 is prized by trapshooters because the barrels were so tough that they never shot out, I suspect that your dad's gun will be able to handle steel but check with a knowledgable gunsmith first.

You may also want to contact Stan Baker, he is a barrel builder who writes a column for Shotgun Sports Magazine and seem to know everything about scattergun barrels.

His E mail address is listed in the magazine as: shotgun@shotgunsportsmagazine.com

Hope this helps, those old M12's were great guns and seem to have a cult like following among shotgunners.

Thank you so much for the info.

My father really does like his model 12 and I would like to see him use it again.

Best regards,

Darren

D,
Gun Parts current catalog lists Win Model 12 barrels for either $75 (12ga 20") or $100 (12 ga 30"). This is from Catalog #21. They can be reached at 914-679-2417. They are out of West Hurley, NY. Shoot steel shot out of 'new' barrel and save original for lead only. Jim
