I picked up an old colt DA revolver I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about it and what it might be worth? it is a "Colt Official police .38 6 in. bbl" it has checkered walnut grips, Looks like brand new, and has the original box it came in, I'm sure the gun must have been fired? but it looks like brand new, no marks on it anywhere. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The age of your OP would help in determining it's worth. They were made for right many years. I would say for a excellent condition model with box should bring around $450.

how do find out how old it is? on top of the barrel it says- Aug,5 1884. July4 1905. Oct.5 1926
Does this help?

Sounds like pre-war to me. I think $550.00 would be appropriate. I suggest a check by a Colt aware gunsmith, if it is refinished, reduce value by at minimum 40% unless the factory refinished it.

It lists as a 1929 model. Because of it's age I agree that the price should increase to the $550 to $600 mark.

Btw....the dates on top of the barrel are patent dates.

Thanks alot guys I appreciate the info. I came across the old gun through work and trade, The gun appears to be factory in the box "mint condition" no blemishes anywhere on it, the checkered walnut grips dont even have a scratch or nick on them, not sure what I will do with it, I'm not into collecting the old guns so I will probably let it go.
Thanks again
