A retired sheriff gave me a box of Sears .22 Short cartridges. Since the TN State stamp on it only shows $.01, I thought it might be "antique" and worth something. Where can I go to find out?
Could very well be worth something to a collector. Exactly how you go about advertising it, I do not know. Perhaps someone on this site can advise you. I'd hold on to it rather than shooting it.
That looks familiar, I have some old 22 and 38-40 with the Tennessee tax stamp. The one in the picture is .03 . I found some places that sell old ammunition in the original boxes, I have also seen some on auction sites. This stuff belonged to my grandfather and I don't plan on selling it, the stuff I saw was not selling for a lot anyway.
Thanks for the replies fellows. I don't think I'll shoot them. The last time I shot a .22 short was in 1964 when I bought a .22 rifle at Corondole (spelling?) in Memphis for $5 down and $5 a month. It was a semi-auto. You could see the bullet fly out of the gun on its way to the target. I switched to LR. I lived in the delta of MS and we would kill water moccasins until they outlawed it. I don't think I ever bought ammo from Sears though.
A friend who was an MP in the army in the late 50's gave me a brass 12 gage shell, Winchester No.12 with 00B, that he brought back with him. I'll put the Sears box with it.
I'm pretty sure that particular box design was used from the late 1940s through the early 1950s, and was then changed to a more modern "cube style box" (shown here: http://imageclosure.blogspot.com/2012/11/sears-ammunition-22-long.html), and after that was changed to predominantly a white box in the modern "cube" format, as shown in the pictures at in the first post here:
Are there any youngsters in your family who might want to have a cartridge collection?
If so, give it to them.
When I was a kid, we had collections of all kinds of stuff, especially ammo.
Somebody over at RimfireCentral might be able to help you out. I know there is a large picture thread of just 22 ammunition boxes.
The current TN ammunition tax is $0.10/box. It would be interesting to track the changes in tax rate which could perhaps narrow down the year somewhat.
