Old .22 Single Shot, w/Shorts

My father in law let me shoot an old single shot .22 he has. Bolt action, probably an old dept store gun. Hard to make out the trademark, very blurred. I fired shorts from about 50 feet, at an old piece of sheet metal siding. Aimed 1st at a seam near the middle & hit it dead on. 2 or 3 more there, rest about a 5 inch group. Was playing more than aiming. I am going to find a similar rifle. The shorts were no louder than a cap gun. Excellent for where I live. Some woods out back, neighbors close on both sides. I can set up safe shooting & not disturb anyone.

There are many of these that also gave you a choice of shorts, long or long rifle. You may want to look for one of these. They maybe a little less expensive than a short only version.

I had a Winchester Model 67 given to me by my Grandfather over 50 years ago. I passed it on to my nephew to keep it in the family.

This one was marked for long & lr, probably for shorts too, badly obscured. He had mostly fire shorts & shotshells with it, shotshells for squirrels.

I assume dept store type, as it is a very plain, no frills at all gun. No metal trim around trigger, just protrudes from wooden slot, has guard of course. Very old, stock is discolored, dried out, barrel is semi rusted with print hard to read. But shoots good. Good gun to have my daughters learn with.

There was a smaller version of the Winchester Model 67 known as the Junior Model or commonly called the boy's model. About 8 years ago, I was offered one for a hundred bucks. I am still kicking myself for not accepting the offer.

You may want to check GunBrokers or one of the other gun auction sites. It is a great rifle for a kid to learn to shoot. I am sure Remington and others made a similar single shot bolt action .22.

The thing i like most about shorts is when you shoot at a target that is 50 or so yards away there is a noticeable delay from when you fire to when the round hits.

ok HERE IS MY INPUT FROM MY YOUTH
I worked in a gunstore for years and was awarded a small, SS 22lr rifle with a birchood stock and Dockendorf rear sight.
I think it was about 1900 mfg.
These rifles were produced in the 1000's as rewards for industrious young men,,industrious; heaven forefend that word in this communist age!
Young boys that sold 1000 subscriptions to a magazine or newspaper got one of these rifles. priced at $1.50 back then. It was a tremendous reward back then and no one took it lightly. Those rifles shot amazingly well, I wish I still had one,,, I have a particular cat as the recipient of a Vitiamin LEAD pill in mind!
Over the years I learned to carry ammo in my mouth and spit it into the chamber (OK, close to the breach, nothing is ever perfect, saliva was invoulved and my mom told me saliva was evile so I never looked at it directly! Sideways lookin was OK ut that is sorta off topic)
sub sonic round are great, need sight adjustment!

From what I understand, CB shorts are even lower-key than reg. shorts? I have a brick of Winchester CB's, and had a ball last spring shooting them at ~500 yard ranges over a very wide river in the AK wilderness. I cannot begin to guess on the holdover, I just had to aim at the treeline at the opposite bank just to get halfway across the river. I had to lead driftwood by something like 30 feet. Great fun. :)

The noise of the hammer falling was louder than the "report".

Rifleer, I forgot to mention the delay. I noticed that too. I estimate 1/4 second or so. More noticeable with the light report of the shell. "Pop",..."ping". With a louder shell at same distance, the report would still be sounding.

I have a little junk .22 revolver. In that, a short is nearly as loud as an LR.

bought an old Stevens crackshot a while back

took mine out with Aquila Colibri's or Super Colibri's... no powder, only priming compound & extra light weight bullets ( I don't think they recommend the regular Colibri's for rifle use... bullet might stick in the barrel ) very quiet shooting & pretty accurate ( soft ball sized groups at 50 feet ) not bad for old single shot :)
