Oklahoma antelope hunt.

I went out to the far county in the Oklahoma panhandle last week on the antelope hunt. Saw a lot of them and got this one the first day. It was 13" and 13.5". I probably should have waited another day because there was a quite a bit bigger one than this, but what the heck.

nice Goat

I have always wanted to hunt antelope.
I didn't know Oklahoma had a season.
I assume that would be the nearest place to me to hunt(mississippi).
Any info on public land in that area?

Nice antelope. I've hunted them several times in Wyoming but had no idea that they ranged down to Oklahoma.

When hunting antelope, you can only pass up a good one for so long. I wouldn't have passed up the antelope you took either.

The Wyoming landscape typically leads to long shots, what is the shooting like in Oklahoma?

Great looking goat!
The antelope hunts in Oklahoma are drawings and I think you pretty much have to secure private land to hunt on once you get drawn. Highly sought after and it takes a bit of luck to be drawn.

They draw for 50 either sex in Sept and 150 doe in Oct. You apply through the wildlife department. You are on you own to find a place to hunt. But there are 17000 acres of public land in Cimarron county. There has been a draw hunt for 25 years or so.

He was 150 yards with a 308. I watched him nail a doe 4 times before I could get closer. There was a 10 incher with them waiting his turn.

I have got an elk in Oklahoma at the Witchita Mountains and now the antelope. I have killed many whitetails, but now I have got to get a muley. That would be all the horns available in OK.

They have buffalo hunts but the are on fenced areas, that don't do much for me.

That's the great thing about antelope hunting. 150 yards is a close shot (usually) because those things have great vision.

Just curious, did you keep the meat? Some people like antelope meat, some people say it is terrible. Personally, I think its the best game meat I've ever had. Much better than whitetail. Anyway, my theory is that it all depends on the diet/range of the antelope. The antelope in the Casper Wyoming area taste pretty good with lots of sage in their diet. Curious how yours will come out.

We have tried the backstrap cooked on the grill. It was as good as whitetail. I was told that it would not be fit to eat, but this one was ok. Even after watch it chase and mount a doe 4 times in a hour and a half.

Someone asked about the land looked like. The picture is pretty typical. No trees except in old homesteads. There is a lot of CRP land, the native pastures will have some Yucca's and mostly gramma grass.
