OK you tactikool junkies... I need some advice...

I'm building a truck gun quite different than most... it'll be a single shot 410 pistol, that it's specific purpose will be for shooting farm pests that I most often ( but not exclusively ) see at night, from my truck, when coming or going from the farm... I.E. it's not uncommon for me to see a skunk waddling up the driveway after dark when I'm coming home, or to see a woodchuck heading across the field towards the building site in the middle of the afternoon... I normally carry a snubbie revolver, as my CCW, but a big skunk in the middle of the night is more of a foe than I normally want to tackle with my snubbie...

... so for my 8" barrel TC Contender shotgun... I'm thinking a barrel mounted tac light, maybe even a cheap laser...

you guys got any suggestions ???

I've been looking at something like this...

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=458084

which has a see through mount... with the little shottie, just the see through mount with no sights might be "close enough" for the shot pattern...

& a light like this...

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=108686

my concern here, is all the cords ( though I'd expect they all have regular on /off switches, if I wanted to go that route )

then when going through the listings at Midway, I came across this unit...

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=495357

which also includes a red dot sight...

I don't really need a high dollar tac light, just something bright enough to light up a skunk in the driveway...

any thoughts on reasonably priced lights & laser accessories for my new truck gun ???

Since your not wanting to spend a lot of money on a flash light, your not going to get that bright of one. Sure it may have 1,000 lumens or whatever, but its not focused and the light disapates rapidly.

My suggestion? Two birds with one stone, get a small Surefire light or Maglite something like that, and just learn to hold it while holding your pistol. There are several grips you can use.

Or you can get one of these ---

and call it a day. Cost about five bucks, and you can use any old Maglite laying around for it.

Do you have any REGULAR pistols you would ever want to put a laser/light combo on?

Buy one of these: $10.00

Screw it onto the front part of your magazine tube. Then buy a Mini-Mag flashlight and screw it into the other hole. Problem solved.

Or spend a bunch of money and get one that's installed in the foregrip:

I shot a skunk recently while bush hogging out back.
It was about 30 yards away. I shot it with a 1911 in .45 from the tractor seat.

By the time I got back to the house the wife was raising holy heck.
It had sprayed but I was upwind and didn't know it. The house was down wind.:barf:

You can use the clamp the LordTrio and I posted on your barrel. Not just the magazine tube.

I guarantee any light mount cheaper than 40 bucks isn't going to have a focused enough light to make a difference at night.

Thats why I suggested getting a Maglite and either practice holding the light and the shotgun, or use the barrel clamp. That way you always have a perfectly good Maglite if you decide you don't want the light on your gun anymore.

Look at the DeLight 2 on my web site. It is a small diameter light, so there may be mounting problems. I don't guarantee they will hold up in gun mounts, but they might. The lights are extremely bright, focus to a narrow beam or wide spot, and are inexpensive.

Sorry. Should have read more carefully first.

Might want to think about a pair of MCR safety gloves then to keep with your pistol.

They're about 15 bucks.

If you're holding your weapon right, should illuminate just fine out in the dark.

hmmm... those are kinda cool... depending on the gadgets attached, all I'd really need to be able to do is light up the critters eyes, & put a laser dot on the COM...

BTW... it's an older Hex barrel... my machinist buddy can either drill & tap, or make me any clamp mounts, but here is a pic of the barrel, just so you guys know what I'm talking about...

just bought it on Gun Broker... I will pair it up with one of my actions, once it gets here, & post a better pic...

OK... here's my "Buck Rodgers" space gun... before it gets dura coated

The primary purpose of this gun...

to ride in my truck, & be used for killing farm yard pests ( like skunks, wood chucks, & opposums... most often seen in the driveway & yard at night )

The gun...

Thompson Contender break action single shot, with an original 44 Hot Shot barrel 8" with shallow rifling, & a screw in straight rifled shot choke

modifications...

rechambered to 444 Marlin & the barrel stamped 444 H L ( handload )
custom steel rear sight base to accomadate the Williams fiber optic rear sight, & with a weaver base built in the top to allow for laser mounting on top
custom see through aluminum laser mount
dovetailed front sight ramp made to fit Williams fiber optic front sight
custom aluminum weaver base & forend mount for the under barrel tactical light, & mount for the custom ( shorter to allow ease of turning on the tactical light with gloves, & allow it to mount further back to reduce lense damage from muzzle blast
thread protector at the muzzle also forms an slight expansion chamber to increase compensator efficency

also pictured...

the straight rifled choke tube & wrench

not pictured...

the custom bullet seater for one of my 444 dies, to push the over shot card down while the case mouth gets crimped
100 brass 444 Marlin cases with the headstamps X'd out ( for shot )
50 nickel 444 Marlin cases with the headstamps x'd out ( for bullets )

what does it shoot ???

3 loads...

beginning handloads of 444 Marlin
buck shot loads of ( to start with ) .360 round balls ) I'll be picking up some .375, which will just touch the rifling on the choke tube )
6 shot 11/16 ounce 3" .410 loads in the brass 444 marlin case

I think you did a good job on that. Not my cup of tea looks wise, but I don't think my cordless drill is pretty either. You made a usefull tool that will suit your needs. Good job.

Thanks DAN... not my "cup o tea" in the looks dept either... but see the skunk in the trucks headlights, pull the gun & flip on the light, find the skunk again, put the red dot on the skunk, & pull the trigger... seems the perfect tool for that job

I figure the gun would be acceptable for putting down an injured deer ( OK with the light & laser for that use ), but lighter loads of 444 aught to do a nice job on deer for hunting, so the laser & the light remove easily, laser mounts back into it's groove, & aught to be plenty accurate for a 10" shotgun at 25-30 ft after being removed & remounted if so desired

I've been thinking about a gun for this purpose for years, & almost bought a Judge , but thought this set up better than the Judge & a flashlight

What the heck!?!?!,,,

to ride in my truck, & be used for killing farm yard pests ( like skunks, wood chucks, & opposums... most often seen in the driveway & yard at night )

You gonna shoot a poor little woodchuck with a .444 Marlin cartridge?,,,
Why don't ya just mount a .50 Barrett on the hood of your truck,,,
Mount a digital video cam behind the rear sights of the gun,,,
And have the trigger solenoid on the steering wheel.

Sheesh!

But it's all okay my friend,,,
You know I couldn't resist the opportunity to rag on you a bit.

I just flashed on this mental image of varmints being blown into the next time zone by your hand cannon.

Aarond

:D Aarond... thats what the shot loads are for ( the skunks... so I don't have to get too close in the dark )

Hey !!! you darned woodchucks... quit chuckin my wood :D

BTW...

Why don't ya just mount a .50 Barrett on the hood of your truck,,,
Mount a digital video cam behind the rear sights of the gun,,,
And have the trigger solenoid on the steering wheel.
that would be so awesome... I wouldn't even have to get my lazy but out of the seat
