My new toy is a shortie Garand with black synthetic stock. It is made by Springfield, chambered in 30-06. Has a five-prong flash-hider.

Hints, advice, URL pointer on use, care, feeding, history would be appreciated. I will post photos and also info about the place where I got it (the most helpful gun shop encountered yet) later this week.

Springfield, Incorporated (not the government Springfield Armory) made a couple of versions of a shorty (sometimes called a "tanker") Garand. With a few exceptions, cleaning and other instructions which apply to the standard M1 rifle apply to that rifle as well. They are not bad guns but have a pretty severe muzzle blast.

If it is a cut down GI M1 rifle, though, there could be problems, since some of that "tanker" work was not done properly. Worse, some of the receivers were made from "cut and weld" receivers that had been scrapped as worn out.

Looks like I have the Springfield Inc rifle. It has a five-pronged "flash hider" that doesn't look all that effective. It went to a gunsmith at once because it turned out that the using safety dropped the bolt. However, it was very good inotehr respects. I got fifteen enblocks and a hundred more on order, along with some 30-06. Got a little FN and soft-point Remington ammo (80 rounds....but half is 180 grain, half is 150...doh!) I have 800 rounds ordered...also an order for 1,000 from ammodeal.com but I can't tell if they got my fax or not. Does anyone know what their email address is?

Cornered Rat,the M1 Rifle has a floating firing pin.I loaded(factory)some hunting
ammo in my M1 shot a few times then....
BOOOOMMMM!!!!!!! It sounded like a 300

will know of what I write.Tiny mark on
the primer told the tale of a slam fire.
Bert
P.S.I still have my DCM M1 an will till I die.

In my other post I mentioned that some of those "tanker" Garands were made with "cut and weld" receivers. One of the problems of those receivers is that they can be shortened slightly in the welding process and remove the safety factor built into the bridge that won't allow the firing pin to go forward until the bolt is locked.

Forewarned and all that.

Hmm, I'm going to show some ignorance.

Your Pic's clearly say "Springfiled Armory".
Why do you say springfiled INc?

The back of the reciever looks just like the two SA DCM/CMP rifles I have. (Base on my poor memory)

Am I mistaken?

Eric

btw: for Ammo have you tried Eric? http://www.ammoman.com

Are you saying I have an ex-military Garand? I am quite ignorant of the M1 variants...can anyone enlighten me as to what I have here? Am I looking at a hack job done on the original longer Garand, or a civvie "tanker" or ?

Also, has anyone experience with converting a 30-06 Garand to .308?

Bert, was what you described an out-of-battery fire? Could a high primer have been the culprit? Was there any damage to the rifle/user?

The receiver, at least, was part of an M1 rifle made by Springfield Armory in Feb 1945. I can't vouch for the rest of the parts. The conversion was not done by the military.
