ok to buy firarm with NY driver license in AL but not with Ohio?

I moved down to AL a while ago and I was able to get a few guns there with my NY driver license but I saw a few states that are not able to buy firarms from the state of AL.

That is very strange.:cool:
 
From what I heard it's not legal to buy pistols except in your state of residence. I've also heard that most states follow Federal law allowing you to buy rifles out of state, but there are a few that don't. Illinois comes to mind but I hadn't heard that about Ohio.

Why would you want to keep a NY driver's license now that you've escaped? From what I've heard its not legal to bring guns to New York without a state permit, so why would a person ever want to move back?

I called AL DMV to confirm that I can just change my driver license to AL while keeping NY registration and insurance with NY state until it runs out. I don't want to go thru the trouble of cancelling my insurance (just got it renewed a few weeks ago) and getting new one while the old one is still in effect.
