OK, this is a shotgun question...

I want to get a new pump shotgun for home defense.

Should I go with Remington or Mossberg? Both have good reputations.

The Remington 870 comes is a really nice marine model. Nickle finish, expanded capacity and cut down barrel.

Mossberg (500 model?) made the cut on the DOD testing and the Army uses it.

Which is easier to clean?

So, pros and cons of each? Or is it just a toss up.

It is a tossup. My personal preference would be for the Remington, but I can't give you any good reason for that except I like the looks better.

Keko,

First let me say, I have NO idea about the remington due to I have never owned one. So my thoughts and comments about them are moot (and I won't say anything for or against them :) ).

Now, the Mossberg, I do have one of those. Mossberg 500A (12 Gauge) and the safety has broken two times and the final straw of owning it (it's now my uncles) is that it failed to pickup a shell and chamber it. As in, the bridge didn't come down low enough to pick up the shell and load it.

So, I will say that mossberg should be given a second thought, and since I have no knowledge on the remington, I will not say anything on that brand.

Mossberg 590. Get the ghost ring sights if you like rifle, regular if you like the bead.

A 500 will last a long time, but...

You cannot break a 590. You can't do it. Those things are I-beams.

As far as the whole "Mossberg saftey" issue goes, it is IMHO the best saftey you can have. Convienently located. The new models will not break. The older ones had weak plastic but new ones are good to go.

Again, ergonomics. I like the feel of the Mossberg, it is much more user friendly than the Remington. 590 feels best to me, most 500s and 870s seem a little... loose?

That said, both are great guns. I like the 870, but the Mossberg is more intuitive.

The 870 might last a tad longer, but it's unlikely the Mossies can be worn out by one generation of shooter. Get the one that feels best.

Next, buy ammo, use up and repeat until it's more of a body part than a tool.

Hello Friends.......I'm not going to get into a peeing contest on which is better. Here at Dixie Slugs we use only Remington 870 Express.
Why? Because that is the gun (combined with Hastings rifled barrels) most of our Southeastern hunters use when they are shooting our heavy slugs.
Now, let me tell you these guns get a pounding and so far none have quit on us.
Do they get extra care? Nope.....just a hose down with WD40 and an occasional action flush with brake cleaner..........James@Dixie Slugs

The USCG uses 870's with a parkerized finish.....I have an 870 that I use for duck hunting, I have always used 870's..........I like 870's, Did I mention my vote goes to the 870?...........

Which Shotgun?

Well I own a Several Remingtons and have never had a problem. My buddie has several Mossbergs and has never had a problem. Both of our guns have been put thru hell and back living in Alaska. My buddies shotgun accompanies him just bout everywhere for the bear protection. So im not partial to either really. I will say this though if you buy one get one with the heavy police or military barrel and extended tube magazine. Buy the synthetic stock and stainless barrel version and you pretty much have no worries for they will take a licking and keep on going boom.
