Ok, thinking about a DSA....opinions requested

I have been tossing this around for some time now, and I'm pretty sure I'm set on the SA58 Carbine model w/ full length handgaurd. My only hesitation is the barrel. I really like the (compact) feel of it, but what will I sacrifice with the shorter length-16.25"? I'm planning on using stictly irons (well, maybe sometime a scope will be in order) and figure most shooting will be of reasonable distance (1-300yds+/-). Also, does the break offer any disadvantages?

Thanks

Excellent article on the DSA SA-58 in October's SOF (Soldier of Fortune). They tested both the carbine and the medium contour. The disadvantage of the carbine seems to be a lot of muzzle flash, as well as being extremely loud. Of course, there are the usual issues of velocity and accuracy with a shorter barrel. I believe at 100 yds they shot 0.8 MOA with the Medium contour and 1.1 MOA with the carbine.

The blast and noise of the DSA standard brake isn't very noticeable when you're shooting. When you hand it to a buddy, then stand to one side, you'll notice it in a big way.

My only concern would be reliable operation. I've heard several people complain about their carbines (not necessarily DSA) short stroking. I think DSA has this worked out, so you're not giving up much, if anything.

I have a DSA carbine and it has been completely reliable. The muzzle brake is loud for neighboring shooters but fine for you.

I have a medium countour 20" Argie import via DSArms. Using Argie surplus ammo it shoots well under 2MOA with iron sights and +/- 1MOA with a Leupold VX2 2-7 variable on a DSA mount.

A buddy let me shoot his DSA carbine. I chronied it and found that he lost nearly 200 fps from my nearly 2800fps. His was just as accurate as mine, and maybe better. But I found the carbine more enjoyable to shoot. It wasn't louder from behind the action, but it gave the shooter a satisfying sonic "whump" with each shot. He likes the carbine size because he wanted a "When the fertilizer hits the fan, Armageddon" rifle suitable for carrying in urban climates.

I would love to install a bipod on mine to further increase accuracey but my barrel doesn't have the required FAL notches, so I will have to tinker.
