Ok, the Savage 10FP is to good to be true...

Well. I usually try not to post too often on what specific guns I own, but I just had to share this one:

I recently got a new Savage model 10FP in .308 Winchester. My goal was to assemble an inexpensive tactical-style bolt-action rifle that could reach out a few hundred yards with exceptional accuracy without costing me a bunch of money. I assembled the following components:

Savage 10FP, .308 Winchester
Tasco World-Class Scope, 3-9X, Mil-Dot Reticle, Matte
B-Square one-piece Weaver-style base
Redfield rings
Hornaday 168-grain TAP ammo

This whole kit and kaboodle came in well under $800. I shot it for the first time today after having the gunsmith mount and check the scope yesterday.

After initial sight-in at 100 yards with cheap Remington 150 grain JSP, I moved the target out to 200 yards. Wind was left to right, about 10mph, temperature about 83 degrees, humidity about 50%. I Fired three rounds from freshly cleaned barrel.

The group has two rounds close together and one farther out (I flinched). The measured group including my flincher is precisely 2 inches. If you cheat and toss out the flyer, the first two rounds are 7/8" apart. The group was a bit off the mark, but a few clicks of the scope had me dancing aluminium soda cans on the berm (200m) without difficulty.

What a bargain!

A couple of friends have 10FPs with Tasco SS10x42 mil-dot scopes, on normal redfield mounts, and Harris bipods. They shoot like a dream!!! It gets better when you adjust the trigger a little bit.

Chad, I bought an Fp10 also and it is an Exceptional shooter!..I put a Springfield Armory 4-14X gov't model scope with rangefinding reticle and let me tell ya...one hole groups at 100meters are the rule...not the exception and so far I've been getting 1.5-2" @ 300 meters...I'm using reloads with 168 gr combined technology bullets and 39 graains of IMR 4895..this is from the bench on the Bipod!

Don't forget to add another 80 or so for a new Trigger. Because the triggers in these rifles SUCKS!!!!! But no they are not to good to be true. They are wonderful rifles and worth more than you will have to pay.

ACtually, I would love to get a two-stage trigger at about 2.5 pounds. Anybody have recommendations and where to buy one? I am told Timney makes one, but I have not found it listed in any of my gun parts catalogs.

A little more info; I was shooting the gun using a sophisticated benchrest/support option that consisted of a rolled up sock under the butt and a small cedar box covered with the rifle bag as my forend rest!

Chad / Boneyard - I've been meaning to ask about this, so now's the time: When the striker falls, does the bolt jerk and jump around, or does it stay still? The bolt on my 11F jumps, and I'm gettting 3" groups at 100, but that's from field positions with aperture sights and cheap white-box Winchester, so maybe it's normal.

Yup, the bolt jumps a bit on mine when the firing pin is released. The Savage bolt is two piece, with the front piece doing the actual work. I would not worry about it.

Follow up on an earlier question: Will the Timney triggers for the Savage 110 work in a model 10FP?

Chad,

I know the Sharp Shooter Supply trigger for the Savage will work in both the 10- and 110-series rifles.

has the Timney trigger for the Fp10...they offer two models, the featherweight which is adjustable between 2-4 lbs and the bvt or benchrest target model whic is adjustable between2-6 ounces..the featherweight lists for $60.00 and the bvt lists for $93.75
I have the featherweight model adjusted to a crisp 3 lbs and I love it

I still remember a good friend of mine giving me hell for buying one of these rifles and mounting a Tasco World Class 3-9x50 scope on it. Throw in the Harris bi-pod, and I've got about $650 in the rifle.

I've found that it likes the PMC loading using the Sierra Matching 168-gr bullets, but I am going to start handloading once I get myself to Colorado and get settled in.

Oh, my friend had to shut up just a tad when I poked three touching holes at 100 yards. :D

Nevermind the heavy barrel models, here is a picture of a typical 3-shot group [admitedly the best one though] of my 6.25 pound Savage light-weight sporter in 7mm-08 Rem.

The group is using Hornady Light-Magnums which push a 140gr spitzer boat-tail to 3000fps ... a 5-shot group opened this to under 3/4".

Can you say EXCELLENT  !

BTW - buy the Sharp Shooter trigger for $68 from Ryan @ Infinity Firearms @ 918-333-3069. They are superb!

You should fully expect 1/2 MOA from a savage 10 fp. Mine likes Hornaday's 168 match ammo. It also likes 44grs of 2520 under a 168 gr Match king with cci 250 primers and 46 gr of Varget under the match king with cci benchrest primers.
