I posted a question about a rifle I thought was a FAL knock off, turned into an H&K clone and now I went to the shop to make SURE. So ok, here is the question.. I am looking at a Federal Arms FA-91.. the guy who was supposed be working there and explain some things to me about it was not there again so.... Does this rifle take regular factory H&K mags? Any good after market mags available? is it a relativly reliable gun? Are parts easy to get? I cant seem to find a website from Federal Arms.
I know I am being a pain in the ass so I'll post this question and duck :(

I don't know much about HK's and variants, but from looking at the Federal Arms ad in Shotgun News, it appears the FA91 is built up from an HK91 parts kit using a US-made aluminum receiver. I expect it would take HK mags, which run $35-$40 +/- (vs. $5-$10 for metric FAL mags).

You might post your questions in the Main Battle Rifle section of AssaultWeb.net There are probably some HK-specific forums out there, as well.

Unfortunately, Federal Arms sells both their own aluminium receiver and Hesse's stamped mess. I believe they build FA-91's on both receivers. Was it blocky and ugly looking (Federal aluminium) or was it decent looking stamped steel (Hesse)? Function wise, the Hesse is quite a bit worse than the Federal cast aluminium type.

All HK-91 clones of which I am aware will accept standard HK-91 magazines. The aluminum receiver will not accept any other HK-91 accessories, including the wide forearm. The stamped versions should accept all accessories, but you never know with Hesse. The cast stainless steel (special weapons) will accept the claw lock mount and wide forearm, but not the port buffer or carry handle.

For the HK clones, http://www.hk91.com is a pretty good source if you bother to search the forums.

Search around for a Interport HK clone. All reports have been favorable and they use a HK licensed receiver (made by FMP of portugal). They will accept all HK-91 accessories, with the exception of the bayonet (but that's not entirely true, is it?).

I take it you've tried AA-Ok and they're out/been out? Otherwise they seem to pop up on the http://www.hk91.com board from time to time.

If you feel brave, Todd Bailey of Special Weapons offered 300 HK-91 style kits, complete with everything with the exception of the firing pin, for $500. That included new parts and a new FMP receiver. $500 worth of smith work and you'll have a high quality rifle for around $1000 (if everything goes well).

the original 91 was extremely reliable. i've heard bad stuff about hesse stamped receivers too and the aluminum ones are too ugly :barf: to consider. the fmp is a real contract hk and everything fits on one.

a friend got a stamped receiver from century arms, don't know manufacturer, and said it works great. he sold off the aluminum we got for him first because nothing but mags were interchangable.

try to stay with hk contract mags, they are stamped as a unit, rather than having parts attached to a main stamping. i have also heard good stuff on thermold mags but, couldn't get some before our ban took effect.

Thank you

Thanks guys I went to the H&K message boards and alot of my questions were answered very quickly..I think I am gonna go for this rifle ;)
