(Tuesday, August 29, 2000) -- As a citizen of Oklahoma, you are in a
very unique position. Your Senator -- Don Nickles -- is one of the
most powerful men in the U.S. Senate. He is the Assistant Majority
Leader. Thus, he needs to hear from you, since he can exercise
tremendous influence in stopping President Clinton from banning
more firearms, from registering gun owners and from ending gun shows
altogether.
Nickles' Support For Self-defense Restrictions
The President and his fellow Democrats in Congress are making a
last-ditch effort to impose draconian gun controls on law-abiding
gun owners. The month of September may be their last chance to get
these infringements passed before Congress recesses for the
elections.
But the sad fact is that your Republican Senator, Don Nickles, has
supported many of the freedom restrictions that the President is
pushing!
Last year, Sen. Nickles voted for gun bans, gun registration and
more. The provisions he supported were an outright attack on your
right to buy firearms for protection, hunting or sport. Some of the
specific details of the 2nd Amendment restrictions that Sen. Nickles
supported are included below.
It is imperative that you take immediate action. Press reports have
shown that Senator Nickles wants to placate gun control extremists
on the Democratic side of the fence by throwing them a gun control
"bone" -- such as requiring the mandatory sale of "lock-up your
safety" trigger locks.
Watts' Support For Self-defense Restrictions
On the other side of the Hill, J.C. Watts is one of the leaders in
the House of Representatives. Unfortunately, he has been quoted
supporting the same kinds of curbs upon your right of self-defense
-- the same kind of "lock-up your safety" limitations that Nickles
has supported.
The truth is, mandatory trigger locks will cost lives. When faced
with an attacker in the middle of the night, the last thing you
need is to fiddle with a mandatory trigger lock, remember a
combination, or look for a key in a dark room. The criminal is not
going to have a trigger lock on his gun!
The way to stop gun-banning zealots like Bill Clinton is NOT to give
them just some of what they want and hope they will disappear. The
answer is NOT to pass gun control "lite." No, the gun haters will
NOT go away! And that is why we must draw a line here and now and
say: NO MORE GUN CONTROL!
Let Senator Nickles and Rep. Watts know that you disapprove of their
recent voting behaviors. Let them know that you do not want
restrictions on your ability to defend yourself or your loved ones.
Please keep reading for more details!
Why Are Nickles And Watts Supporting Limits On Self-defense?
Nickles and Watts have actually encouraged fellow Republicans to
vote for gun control "lite."
According to the highly respected National Review magazine: "[Sen.]
Nickles said Republicans could take the gun issue off the table if
the House would pass some cobbled-together package including
mandatory trigger locks.... Representative J.C. Watts, also a
Republican from Oklahoma, agreed with the idea." -- National Review,
June 2000
Senator Nickles Votes For 2nd Amendment Restrictions
Limiting The Private Sale Of Firearms. Senator Nickles voted to ban
the private sales of firearms at gun shows unless the gun buyer
submits to a government registration background check. (Source:
Congressional Record, May 14, 1999, p. S 5326.)
Punishing Parents For Letting Their Kids Touch A Gun Under Many
Circumstances. Senator Nickles voted for an amendment that would
greatly discourage today's youth from getting educated in the lawful
uses of a firearm. The provision Nickles voted for means that if
you, as a parent, take your kid target shooting, you can't walk to
the car to grab a lunch, without risking a mandatory year in prison!
(Source: Congressional Record, May 13, 1999, p. S 5236.)
Banning Medium Capacity Magazines. Senator Nickles voted to ban the
importation of any magazine that holds over 10 rounds -- a direct
attack upon the ability of law-abiding gun owners to defend
themselves. (Source: Congressional Record, May 13, 1999, p. S 5238.)
Opening The Door To BATF Harassment Of Gun Owners. Senator Nickles
voted to commit $40 million to increasing the presence of the BATF
and its cronies -- not to investigate murders, violent felonies, or
crimes of violence -- but to pursue firearms "offenses" (such as
recordkeeping and other innocuous errors). (Source: Congressional
Record, May 14, 1999, p. S 5326.)
Representative Watts Votes For 2nd Amendment Restrictions
Restricting Private Sales. Rep. Watts voted for a crime bill last
year that would have banned the private sales of firearms at gun
shows, unless buyers submitted to background registration checks.
While this bill contained a couple of good provisions, the bill was
fraught with 2nd Amendment limit-ations. For example, the bill
would have imposed mandatory anti-safety trigger locks with the sale
of every handgun, and would have penalized young adults for the mere
possession of certain firearms or magazines holding over 10 rounds.
While the latter provision would NOT stop juvenile thugs from
getting firearms, the legislation WOULD punish law-abiding youth
that, under most circumstances, go target shooting with their
parents. (Source: Congressional Record, June 18, 1999, p. H 4656.)
ACTION: Fax or e-mail your legislators in opposition to gun control!
Ask Sen. Nickles and Rep. Watts to stop supporting gun control.
Tell them to stop supporting restrictions that anti-gun zealot Chuck
Schumer would support, and instead, to start voting like the pro-gun
stalwart from Oklahoma -- Sen. James Inhofe!
Please voice your opinion right away. You can do that by:
1. Using the sample letters below and sending them to Sen. Nickles
and Rep. Watts. Ask your family and friends to contact them as well.
2. Asking your state legislators to contact Sen. Nickles as well.
To do that, go to http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm and
select the Guide to States for Oklahoma. The write your legislators
feature found there includes an easy, automated system for
contacting all of your state legislators with an included
pre-written message.

----- Pre-written Letter -----
Hon. Don Nickles
U.S. Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Nickles:
I am disappointed in the fact that you swallowed quite a bit of gun
control last year during the battle over the juvenile crime bill.
From young adult gun bans to background registration checks for
private sales at gun shows, you voted for quite an array of
unconstitutional legislation.
But the clear language of the 2nd Amendment says the right of the
people to keep and bear arms "shall not be infringed." Every piece
of gun control that you have supported is clearly an infringement!
President Clinton is pushing hard to get more gun control enacted
before leaving office. So please use your leadership position to
OPPOSE any juvenile crime bill or spending bill that contains 2nd
Amendment restrictions. England's comprehensive gun ban hasn't
taken guns out of the criminals' hands. Do we really think that
milder gun restrictions will work any better at disarming crooks in
this country? If you vote for any so-called compromise bill, you
will be voting against gun owners and they will vote against you.
Sincerely,
----- Pre-written Letter -----
