Oil, much to use? Generally speaking.

Hey fellers I've got a bit of a juvenile question. I was cleaning some of my guns and talking to a friend who is an armorer in the marines. Anyways he noticed that I was using my finger to spread the oil around and told me if they got caught doing that they were usually punished. Said they hammered it home that to lubricate use a patch to apply the oil so your fingers don't cause the metal to rust. What are your thoughts on this? Just curious.

If I was going to worry about rust forming from my lil old fingerprints- I think I'd worry about all the fingers that weren't employed with oil spreading duties. But then, I was in the Army and I guess we was just happy that oil got to where it needed to be regardless of how it got there.

There are people who have very corrosive oils on their fingers !!! Such as picking up a piece of blued , dipped in preservative oil , and leaving a perfect set of fingerprints in RUST ! He worked in a bearing factory !!
There are soaps and lotions for those people to use.
At one time I came across a Federal spec for inspection .It clearly stated that "This inspection shall not be done by women " Some women have corrosive oils on their fingers at certain times !

Generally speaking, when it comes to oiling a gun, less is more.

I always use a LIGHTLY oiled patch to wipe down the gun when I'm done cleaning it. Not because I'm worried about corrosion (as a mechanic my fingers are always covered in oil, plus there is basically no humidity here) but because you simply don't need that much. The amount of oil it takes to wet your fingers (and smear it around) is WAY more than you need to be putting on your gun.
