Ohio *safe storage* bill "defeated"

Hard one to title for! The bill, which potentially would have turned a crime victum into a felon, was titled *Safe Storage*. And the defeated part, is not quite accurate either, as the bill didn't get enough *support* to make it to a vote. Bottom line and good news is this piece of trash is gone! What started out as a call to make trigger locks mandatory, escalated into a call to make it a felony to have an unsecured firearm, if used in a crime, fall into the hands of a minor. There are several existing laws centered on child endangerment that cover the rightful ares. This was a redundent piece of junk, that extended the area of blame to include those not at fault. Bad idea, good job getting this one to disappear.

Side note: The defeat was credited to a grassroots effort (calls and letters), that shows some promise for Ohio to get CCW(CHL) laws put in place. It looks like they may be starting to listen in Columbus :)

Thanks for the update on this, RAE. From what I heard yesterday, state rep. Ron Hood was threatening to attach HB 165 (CCW) to this "Safe Storage" bill if it looked like it was going to come to a vote. The criminal justice committee chair, who has been having public hearings on this bill for weeks, decided that they didn't have the votes to get it out of committee, even without the attachment, so they didn't even vote.

I worked at the Ohioans for Concealed Carry table at the Akron gun show last Saturday and, in addition to signatures for CCW, we collected signatures for the defeat of this bill. They were sent to Columbus on Tuesday. Maybe they had a bit of an effect, I'd like to think so anyway.

For now, this "Lock-up Your Safety" bill is dead.
R.I.P. ;)

Let's hope that this small victory for sanity will show Gov. Taft the error of his ways.

BTW, it's going to take a strong stomach to read the editorial spin put on the death of this bill in the coming weeks. Get ready to hear about how the legislature didn't have enough "courage" to stand up to the "gun lobby" and pass this "common sense" measure.

Gag.
