I am a new ccw holder and use a shoulder holster. In Arkansas it can get quite warm and if you wore a jacket you would be a walking billboard that you are packing heat, do any of you carry a shoulder rig with a long sleeve button up shirt? I have tried this a few times out in public and it feels like im carrying a basketball under my arms. My wife is a poor canidate to tell if im carrying because she knows i have it. I carry a small PT111 TAURUS. Ive tried a in the pants holster but it doesnt work because of my "spare tire". if anybody has any tips i would appreciate them Thanks, Chris

Try a light denim vest. Country and Western stores usually carry them in several colours.

Wear the vest over a short-sleeved Western shirt.

If you wouldn't carry one of those evil things around, you wouldn't have this problem!

SOB works well, but you may also want to try IWB strong-side carry (just behind the outside seam of your pants). This won't interfere with that "spare tire".

Vest idea is good. I also sometimes wear a tee-shirt tucked in with a button shirt worn unbuttoned over top. The button shirt covers the gun. This works well enough to conceal my G-17 in a strong side belt holster.

That Taurus should be light and small enough for ankle carry...

try putting it between the pockett and the zipper on what ever strong side you are, and that little bit off tire will help hide it.....check to see if it interferes with sitting comfort though...fubsy.

I, too wear a shoulder rig with a SIG 239, and hide it under a travel vest (Orvis). On really hot days I wear a strap T under the vest, use a fanny pack, or the Tomcat in a pocket holter. HTH, M2

BountyHunter,
I too have a pretty good "spare tire" but have no trouble carrying my G26 almost all the time IWB, just forward of my rt rear pocket. I just drape the tails of a shirt over it and away I go. This also works pretty well with my G30. You may want to consider trying out other IWB holsters to see if you can find one that works for you.
If not then you may want to consider an ankle holster, not my first choice but lots of people manage it well.

I live in Florida and I understand your prob with warm weather carry. BTW, I've never met anyone down here who carries in a shoulder holster. I think shoulder holsters were invented for TV <grin>, I don't think real people use them much. Maybe in the great white north where it is cold all the time?

I want to echo the idea of carrying strong side over the rear pocket (or a little in front of that), IWB or OWB. Generally IWB is a little less confortable but more concealable than OWB. If you carry too far back, it isn't comfortable to sit. If you wear it too far to the side, it is harder to conceal.-
Untuck your shirt and you are good to go. I wear tee shirts, polo shirts, or short sleeve button up shirts. It looks a little sloppy, but it works for most of us. I find that my "love handles" actually help. The gun/holster sinks a little in and helps with concealment.

The two secrets:
1) Get a good gun belt - It should be about 1 1/2 " wide and stiff. There are places that sell true "gun belts" or you can go to a western store and get a good sturdy belt (that's what I did).
2) Get a GOOD holster. Expect to pay some money, the cheap nylon holsters aren't the ticket, get a leather or kydex holster that is shaped to fit your particular gun.

Expect to change your CCW gun, holster, and method of carry a couple of times! If you don't, you'll be the first person who hasn't! If you lived closer, I'd show you my holster drawer. Sometimes I think I could open a gun shop with all the gear I've used then realized it didn't work!

FWIW, I've carried:
1) A small 22 mag darrenger in a pocket, no holster
2) A 38 stubby in both a pocket holster and IWB
3) A P11 IWB with a belt clip
4) A small 32acp in a pocket holster
5) A large frame auto in a fanny pack
6) A G26 in an IWB holster
All of these in the last three years!

Access isn't great, but doable - take a look at Thunderwear. Works great with small semi-auto's, like Kahr's.

Consider also a 'belly band', with the gun almost under an armpit. Some guys leave a button undone under their tie, and access is pretty quick.

Ankle holsters would be another option I suppose, but I hear they are even more of an access problem - I gather most folks only consider them for backups.

Here in Phoenix the temp's are so hot that deep cover is really the only way to go, if you don't want anyone to know.

If you're going to go with an ankle holster, have your better half open the last six inches of the inseam on your left jeans leg. Replace the stitching with Velcro.

Wear your ankle holster on the inside of your left ankle.

To draw, step forward with your left leg, kneeling on the right. Grasp the outside hem with your left hand and pull out, opening the Velcro over the holster. Draw with your right hand.

Almost as fast as a regular draw.

Here in Arizona it gets real hot. I purchased what I call "tactical shorts". They have big pockets. The Taurus snub, Makarov, or now my Glock 26, gets tucked away into the pocket, and away I go. Oh, in an Uncle Mikes pocket holster of course.

At the big Tulsa show last weekend terridarri I spent two hours both days speaking with a gentleman that had developed a new concealment rig that fits under clothing. Upon initialy meeting him he demontrated he was carrying not one but two full size 1911's under a light weight dress shirt fully concealed. His sales pitch included tellng me how few people will actualy carry a gun as large as a 1911 so these could conceal anything. I asked him if it would hold/ceonceal a 6" "N" frame Smith. Laughing he assured me it would if anyone was crazy enough to carry one. I then removed my Smith, which had been fully concealed. He convinced me to try on one of his rigs, which I was reluctant to do.
This thing is unbelievable. In the twenty plus years I have carried a 6" Smith I have tried every concealment rig to hit the market, usualy with very disappointing results. This rig, which is difficult to describe, is similar to a bellyband but with much better features. Wearing it actualy seems to reduce the weight of the gun. I have worn it for a week now and extremely pleased with it.
He and I are now negotiating for us to become the Missouri/Kansas distributor. In a couple of weeks I had planned to ask Rich via e-mail about placing a post here on TFL informing the members and asking if anyone would be interested.

The Mitch Rosen "Workman" holster is ideal. It's an IWB holster that lets you tuck in a shirt over it. Do that, then "blouse" the shirt a bit, and it's invisible. A friend specifically tried to identify whether I was carrying, even patted me down some, and failed to find the G26.

Jeff Thomas - your talking "Superman" carry.
This is what I do quite a bit. Did so for the Luncheon at SHOT in Vegas. It works very well for many situations.
Tshirt - your Belly Band or Shoulder Rig - then your overshirt. The Overshirt should be rather loose or flowing, but doesnt have to be baggy. It should also be of a dark color, or a pattern that breaks up the lines of anything printing from underneath.
Your shoulderrig should be adjusted carefully to not allow much swing or shifting... Your belly band should be worn positioning the gun like it would be in a shoulder rig.
Under a Tie the buttons can be left undone... but I'ld rather not have the shirt ooen like that. Simple ripping the shirt open works just fine. If your in a situation where your having to draw fast - screw the buttons! If your in a situation where you know you will be drawing from concealed such as this... replace the buttons with a tab of velcro in the places where buttons usually are - sewing the button in place so it looks as if its buttoned normally... this Break Open modification has been done to many of my shirts by my wife. She can do this in about 15 minutes per shirt.
It works.

I have used the method George mentioned and agree that it works well.

Ken Null makes polymer holsters, white in color, intended for just such under-the-shirt carry. The poymer construction also affords a bit of corrosion protection to the weapon's finish.
