Oh, by the way, along with the weight loss?

I've quit smoking. It was cutting WAY too deeply into the firearms budget.

I'm going to be a REALLY pleasant person to be around in about, oh, 30 seconds... :)

Giving up smoking can be counterproductive to losing weight, so be warned.

I'm heading the same way myself: cigarettes are $8.20 a pack of 25 here, and I just can't afford them any longer.

Mind you, beer's $31 a carton (24 x stubbies) too -- but that's a whole different question. :D

I agree totally with you on the "image" of gunowners. The media especially love to pick up on any physical traits they see as stereotypical of gunowners.

For that reason, my club strongly discourages wearing of "camouflage" or ex-military clothing while shooting.

We had a group of shooters interviewed by TV. They were all what you would call "Average Joes" -- not a redneck among them.

The TV crew did things such as:

* set the camera at waist level and shot upwards -- this makes anyone look like a fugitive from "Dr Frankenstein"

* focused so tightly on one speaker they only showed his mouth (true). Anyone looks "evil" when treated like this.

* found one shooter bit his nails, so they only shot his hands while he spoke.

Believe me, image is everything!

Good luck with the diet. My wife has lost 20 lbs with Weight Watchers, and I lost 50 lbs with the "Gut Busters" program, which concentrates on reducing fat.

Once BRIEFLY dated a girl who was trying to quit smoking at the same time that she started a diet  made an angry hornets' nest look calm by comparison.

OUCH! $8.20 a pack? Not sure what the exchange rate down there is, but still!

I quit in '98 when they hit $3.00+ a pack, thanks to the tobacco co lawsuit judgements and theMEATHEAD TAX (Rob Reiner's ballot initiative) in CA.

I swore I'd never pay a dollar a pack, then told myself when they hit $2 a pack, that was it. But by God, a pack a day @ $3.00+ is well over a thousand dollars a year up in smoke. Scr#w that! Even after a couple of years smoke free, I still get cravings for a smoke once in a while. But name brand cigs in CA are up to around $4.00 a pack now. NO WAY!

Just one of the Good Guys

Just about 24 hours with a cigarette, and no real cravings.

Just the desire to turn my computer into a collection of scattered chips.

But I had that urge BEFORE I quit smoking.

There are things I already miss about it, but I'm having none of the nicotine withdrawal symptoms that others have spoken about.

IF you can do it now go camping.

It will give you time to blow the stuff out of your system and keep you away from it.

It's too expensive and unhealthy to keep up.
(a box of ammo per pack, forget it!)

Good Luck to you Mike,
You can do it!

A few things that helped me quit, and lose weight was a solid decision to CHANGE MY LIFE. That's something only you can do. I also found someone who was healthy and began to copy them. I didn't, and don't, particularly care for that person, so it became a bit of a competition ("If that little turd can work out 45 minutes a day, and live on fruit and crackers, then I can too").

Remember, this is your job now. Only you can do it. It may not be fun, BUT, your life depends on it!

I've lost 3 grandparents to cigarettes and bad diet. the threat is VERY real!

Best of luck to you!
