Offset scope mount???

Just picked up a savage 16 (lefty version) from Gander Mountain. When I bought it, the employee mentioned something about an offset scope mount or rings (I dont remember if he was referring to the mounts or rings) and not knowing if they had any in stock. Turns out that they didnt have any.

Is something different about the savage 16 where something with the scope mounts or rings is required to be "offset" and if so, what is so different and what kind of mounts or rings or scopes would i need?

The barrel of the rifle is 26", free floated...caliber is .300 Win Short Mag if that matters.
If im not mistaken, there are four little holes in the top for a scope mount

Hmmm, I guess the employee passed up about a 200 buck sale saying they did not have offset rings for it? lol

What does offset rings mean anyway?

Offset rings are usually designed to handle some kind of eye relief problem. Bolt action rifles usually don't have this problem, as the scope mount can handle one ring on the front "bridge" and another on the rear one. However, the Ruger No. 1 is notorious for having the scope mount too far forward for proper eye relief with many scopes. Offset rings slant to the back an inch or so and provide for a more comfortable shooting position without having to "crawl the stock" with your cheek. Like this -

The modern offset mount is usually used in 3-gun competition and provides for mounting a close range red-dot sight in an offset position to one side or the other of the long range (scope) mount. Like this -

The problem with employees in some of the larger sporting goods stores which also sell rifles is that they may not know any more about what they are selling than you do...and they aren't likely to tell you that they are ignorant. :)
