Any advice or recommendations on what would be a good off duty pistol...Looking for something relatively compact, DA/SA, no thumb safety and decock only, in a .45. Looking to spend no more than $700 if possible....Thanks...

What about a compact H&K .45, or a personal size Sig P239 .40. Any +/- for either...Let me readjust my spending limit to $800.

I would prefer either the Sig P220A or P245;
both are .45ACP's.

Before they sold out all gunner's I bought a S&W 4553 TSW for both on, and off, duty. Its a good gun unless your someone that needs 300 rnds of ammo on your person to feel safe, with 17 in your magazine.

I want to laugh when I see these kids come on the job ,that never fired a gun before, and start telling me how they need a 15 shot 9mm to "equal the odds with the bad guy's", they must read that in the paper.

Give me a partner with a 7 shot 45acp, and knows what he's doing, anyday...........WG6

If it's gotta be .45 acp = Glock 30. Although, I highly reccommend the Glock 27. I love mine. Got rid of almost everything else.

If you are willing to part with $800.00 I wish you would look into a used P7M8 in 9mm. It's not a .45 but loaded with the right ammo (115gr Corbon) and in trained hands it's a great weapon.

I here you can still get the refurbs for $700.00 to $800.00 if you look around abit.

But if you must have a .45, go with the USP compact. I have a .40 compact and I love it. Seriously think about parting with my 228 or 229 for another.

Sir, your remarks are repulsive to me, and I disagree with your viewpoints. But I will defend to my death your God given right to express them.

WHile I not a big fan of compact 45's (like 45's full size myself) I would recomend teh sig 245 as it meets your criteria and sigs are reliable and accurate. The HK usp compact and Beretta cougar are also very good. If you can bend your criteria to include the glock 30 it is the best of the compact 45's.

I would recommend the HK .45 compact.
I don't dislike Glocks or Sigs I just like
the safety/de-cock lever that the HK has.
I don't care for guns with no external safety.
I have an HK .45 compact and it is very accurate and reliable.
Spend the extra money, The compact will last forever.

Does your agency have any guidelines for off-duty carry weapons or do they consent to your choosing? Just scanning your message I would assume the last mentioned. You referred to the .45 caliber as your preference so I would concur with the HK USP Compact in that caliber. My agency issues a choice of side arms and we must carry approved weapons off-duty as well as on, this includes qualification with the weapon and inspection by an instructor. So were kind of locked into what we can and cannot carry.

Matt, ditto on the HK compact. But one thing I didn't see posted that I'd try to do is keep it as close to my duty weapon as possible as far as controls. Since you probably shoot your duty weapon alot, it's easier if your backup is as close to identical as it can be. In the stink, you don't want to have to stop and remember how to work the dang thing.

The Beretta 8045 would be a good candidate. I have both the 8040 and the 8045. Both in my opinion are good guns for the money.
Also recently I purchased a used S&W CS.45 I believe that also to be a good compact .45 The S&W is a bit boxy and sort of stubby compared to the Berettas,it may take some time getting use to. That is why I got a good deal on it. The guy bought it new and found after shooting it one time it didn't fit his hand properly. But it works for me :)

For what its worth,Hope it helps ;)

Happy Shooting :)
