Of gophers and guns

Annually I go out to the prairies and go terminate a whole bunch of rodents , that go by the name of the richardson ground squirrel.

In the past few years I have found that the rifle I use most is the 22 MAG

1. CZ 452 bolt gun 4X -14X bushnell
and my
2. Remington 597 Semi-auto in 22 MAG Both guns are around 1 1/2 MOA

I have bought a .17 Savage which is quite impressive in the accuracy Dept

Does this tiny but fast bullet hit them as hard as the 22 Mag??
The 22Mag pretty much cuts them in two for an instant kill. I hate getting "crawlers".

What can I expect from this new rimfire wonder gun ???

PS: I want to keep the topic on rimfires and not have CF guns discussed

Thanks JD

I suspect the rodents will not know the difference. The question becomes, will the scavengers find a little more on their plate or not. I suspect the .17 might leave a tad more meat.

My experience with .17 HMR, using Hornady Varmint Express ballistic tips, has been outstanding. Explosive on small critters. Seems to hit much harder than it has a right to. I think you'll be happy.

I have used .17HMR on much bigger things than Parie Dogs.... mainly wood chucks... even a coyote or two. You will be better suited with the .17hmr.

The only real difference between the 22 and 17 that i have found is that the 17 tends to be more accurate. You have 2 really good shooting 22 mags though so that isn't an issue.
