Odd issue with my Steyr M40

I'm not sure if I've discovered a problem with my Steyr M40 or a "feature"

When you lock back the slide and you insert a full magazine, if you slap it into place (as opposed to gently pressing it into place) the slide returns to battery and it chambers the round.

If I gently press it into place the slide stays back (until I hit the slide release with my thumb, then it retuns to battery as one would expect).

Is it supposed to do this?

Is this some sort of "under pressure fast reload" feature?

I've had this happen to almost every auto I ever had. If you slap it in hard enough it "shakes" (for lack of a better term) the slide release off, slide goes forward and round is chambered. I spoke to a gunsmith about it and he said it happens, but only when you insert the mag significantly harder than what is required. Maybe your M40 is sensitive??

Hope this helps.

I've seen this on several different pistols. THe last I remember was an HK USP.

This is not a feature but it also may not be somthing you want to fix for obvious reasons. Something is a little out of wack and could be traced to one of several potential minor problems. Take it to a gun smith and they should be able to tell you in a heart beat or if it bothers you send it back to Steyr.

Ok, I did a little experiment.

I keep the gun loaded with 135gr CorBon JHP (because that's the only SD ammo I have).

Well I've always had problems hand ejecting the CorBon ammo (it would hang up on the ejector unless I yanked the slide back real fast).

So I loaded up a magazine with some of the PMC FMJ I have laying around. I can't get it to "slam" into battery, it works like it should. So I tried some American Eagle, some Wolf and some Winchester. None of them caused the slide to "slam" into battery.

The only time it happens is with the CorBon.

I've come to the conclusion that I don't like CorBon and next trip to the range I'm going to burn through the 20 rounds I have left and get something else for self defense (I wish I could get ProLoad localy...I've read a lot of good things about it).

My Steyr M9 does this. I consider it a plus in IDPA. When would you want to slam in a full mag and not have it chamber a round?

Zundfolge:

The problem you speak of is not a bug. The Steyr is designed to do this, as are HK USP .45 models and a few other pistols. It offers the advantage of a really fast reload. Check your manual, I believe it's in there somewhere.

I had an M-40 and thought it a really slick design, just wasn't as accurate as I would've liked.

Good Luck.

Well I re-read the manual and found nothing in there about it.

I'm not worried, it seems to be common amongst other quality pistols and it only seems to do it with the CorBon ammo (which I will soon be out of and won't be getting any more).

As for accuracy, it's more accurate then I am ;)

My Walther P99 does this on occasion as well, as does my Glock 19 and my Glock 17.
No problem, just one of them things. :D

Not in the manual? Oh well, I remember reading about this feature somewhere, guess I'm losing it again. At any rate my M-40 would do this whenever a fully loaded magazine were slammed into the magwell no matter what type of ammunition.

Agian, the M series Pistol is a very slick design, that's why I bought one. The reason for selling it though has more to do with my performance and prefferences. The M-40 that I had though reliable and reasonably accurate, just was not as accurate in my hands as other pistols I own.

Down the road, if Steyr manufactures the M series in 45 ACP I will have to pick one up.

I like my M40 but if they ever made an M45 I'd swap in a heart beat (assuming I couldn't just buy the M45 in addition to my M40)

also if the S40 ever makes it to the states I'll probably have to get one.

If I could actually find a Steyr M-9 in town I think could rationalize that purchase as well. My wife is partial to Glocks, but insists on a manual safety. Who knows maybe I'll run into one at the next gun show just in time for Christmas.

mept99 e-mailed me today stating that SGN has M series for $359.00, I plan to check it out through a dealer I know. I paid $450.00 for my M-40 so this price has me intrigued.

I got mine from its original owner in a Gunbroker auction...I paid $379 and got 2 magazines (plus he had the $35 gift certificate from Steyr when he got the trigger upgrade, so I sent it to GSI for an extra magazine). I think I got an exceptional deal too so $359 would be excellent.
