I live in a area where everyone had a gun. Every boy had a 22, even if it was a
single shot. Recreation was shooting rats at town dump, bottles and cans. Nobody even thought of shooting someone. When you traveled through these
little Poduc towns you would see kids playing ball, riding bikes and all kinds of
outdoor activities. Now 3 generations later the kids are inside playing computer
games, many are shoot'em ups. The first thing you know they talk their parents
into buying a AR type rifle to play with. The parents are not gun people or hunters. The kid has no conception of what he has got in his hands. I think
parents just get the gun to humor kid. These are the little snots that go off deep
end and hurt people. The parents of these kids should be prosecuted if the kid
misuses gun. A lot of Sandy Hooks on back burner that ends up blaming the
responsible gun owners.

Betcha' very few kids go from video games to the real thing.
Doubt that very many parents go out an buy their kids guns, just 'cause.
The very few who do go off the deep end are the ones getting all the publicity.
But they're hardly representative of kids as a whole, regardless of how hard the media tries to make it so.

Two points the OP made got my attention.

1)The idea that violent video games contribute to people committing acts of violence. Not sure I agree with that and pretty sure there is no data to support that idea.

2)However the point that people who grow up around guns having a healthier respect for gun safety is a good one. Sometimes I think if kids were exposed to firearms in a safe controlled environment where they learn proper safety and etiquette we would be better off.

Such parents would have to lack the sense that the good Lord gave a mushroom.

Most folks who have the financial means to afford an AR- they aren't cheap- are a good deal more reasonable than this.

+1. IMHO the link between video games and violence is tenuous at best. Violent video games draw attention because they're relatively new, but let's not forget that violent movies and TV shows are abundant, many "respectable" works of literature are quite violent (including the Holy Bible), and it's been several decades since Johnny Cash sang that he "shot a man in Reno just to watch him die".

Pop culture is violent, and I believe it's a reflection of the fact that people are inherently fascinated by violence. However, I find it readily evident that the vast majority of the human population can play violent video games, watch shoot 'em ups, read violent stories, and so on without ever participating in actual physical violence. In fact, I think there's a good argument to be made that these activities may PREVENT violence by giving people a harmless outlet for angry or violent feelings.

The lack of evidence for the video connection is now becoming well known in the professional literature.

One telling point is the dramatic drop in crime and dramatic increase in violent video games. I've an article that describes such but it's at work. Too lazy to search now. Sue me.
