Observation/questions re TFL political activism

Not a rant, an observation and questions ....

labgrade's "a crazy," one of those "fringe elements."

I, and a couple others have done some posts regarding a somewhat more overt, strident type of activism.

These type posts seem to get very scant attention in TFL. A post re a boycott, a poll, 'when they take my guns, I'll ... " get all kinds of discussion.

The true activism posts don't. Don't be mad about the "true activism" bit. It's only a (maybe poorly put) description trying to draw a difference between bitching to the choir, writing those letters, making the phone calls, etc. and overt protesting, etc.

Really not trying to start a flame war here ... I'm looking for some discussion about the subject.

I've done several posts about TRT, Let Freedom Ring! 2000, some of the in the streets demos we've done in CO, I even was guest "speaker" in Freedom Republic (last was David Horowitz & some pretty big national "heavies" to come), had a write-up in WorldNetDaily (not too shabby) ... these seem to get little attention.

I'm curious why.

The letters, calls, etc. are certainly needed but I see that a more active approach is absolutely required as the current status quo - what we're doing now, isn't working.

The boat needs to be rocked - hard. We're being ignored.

There's a certain comfort level that we seem to not want to cross & I see the activism bit broken down into a few catagories.

Those that'll donate to their fave gun-group - basically let them do it for you.

Others will write letters, make the calls, discuss in forums, etc./preachinig to the choir.

Some will actually attend public town halls/legislative sessions, etc.

We are doing all that and out on the streets at every opportunity and in their face.

Are we the "crazies?"

Again, no flames - a question only.

I'll leave it at that and hope to generate some discussion about the activism topic.

there was an effort to get people to show up in WDC for the March for Liberty in October

Rich even offered to subsidize 3 TFLers trip

we had ~40 people in dc for the rally
i fear the same thing will happen at MMM

it's easy to type out indignation

showing up requires scheduling and prioritizing.

i am very concerned with our liberty and constitution, but i find it very easy to be marginalized. After all there are other real world issues for my family. Like paying bills and work.

Welcome, my son
Welcome to the machine
What did you dream?
It's all right we told you what to dream

No labgrade, you're not one of the "crazies",
you're one of the few "doers". I fully concur that the boat has to be rocked.

I went through this drill capaigning against NAFTA with the same shrug-of-the-shoulders from those who it would affect most. A year later when their jobs went South of the Border or overseas, they came crying to me to "do something". It was my turn to shrug.

Hopefully, there are more like you who will stir the pot. I live in a small town in Nevada and have limited chances to raise Hell other than as a keyboard warrior to the newpapers and politicians around the country.

Some of my family consider me a "nut" and nothing I say will convince them otherwise.
Now it's my turn to shrug and continue the fight.

Don't let it get to you -- keep it up.

labgrade, no you're not a crazie. I constantly write letters to the editor, to my representatives (as well as call them), attend committee hearings, copy stuff from TFL and forward it to other gun owners, etc.
There's a lot more I could do if I had the cash. Public demonstrations are definitely something I'd like to get involved in.

We have to keep fighting. It's frustrating sometimes, though. I think I spend more time fighting than I do shooting.

Let me add a little voice of dissent here. I've met labgrade, protested alongside him and his wonderful wife, and the man is DEFINITELY a CRAZIE! ;) (Who loves ya, baby?)

I also share his concern that the work is plentiful but the workers appear to be few. It's all about priorities. When it really comes down to it, what MATTERS to you?

I also share the concerns about providing for family as I am newly a father for the fourth time (I have kids aged 7, 5, 3, and infant) and am about to undergo a serious life change as I get out of the Navy after 12 years and enter the civilian world for the first time in my adult life. That's not an easy thing from where I sit. But I know that it is in the best long-term interest of my family for me to do so. That is where the rubber meets the road, in my opinion.

What is in the real best interest of your family?

What kind of country do you want YOUR kids (or grand-kids) to grow up in?

What are you willing to do about it?

Get those questions answered, and I honestly think that we'll have more people out in the streets protesting the government's invasion of our natural rights than we could ever envision.

Replies! A start! A good thing .... beats the silence/absence of dialog.

dz: There are those "family" considerations. (BL addresses the same - to date/time). I'm one of those "luckies" in that my kids are grown up (will they ever be?! :)) and have the "extra" time. I've found too, that we make the time to be effective. The most intense people I know are all extremely busy, but by "making the time," they become effective for their goals.
Time management cuts the mustard (where the hell did that phrase come from ?) ... those that can = do ....

And, yes, I do type out the indignation - you should've seen the rough draft of the same initial post. ;) (I waited a day+ - the "think twice/post once" theme - even I can learn to be nice) ...

Thing is, I AM indignant. Same as with when Gale & Lawdog were beat up/sick/in the hospital .... TFL's 4K strong & we get pretty much zip (proportionate) for "real" political/humanitarian effort/cards/calls activity? (or to the "friends are hurting" threads) ... we ARE a family here (I've found no 'net-place (as is TFL) yet to match you people - none!) ... but we are sadly lacking in performing an effective reactionary (mutter) much of anything.

Off the top of my head, I recall an Arizona (?) TFLer doing some great street-theatre re gun buy-backs (media attention, etc. = was great), El Jefe (who could top the HCI/Baretta slam-dunk?! = wonderful = reprecussions are still being felt = still grinning about that! = huge! such a coup!)

A big disappointment that "we" don't get out more often. It really is a kick/fun for the whole family. You would not believe the "breath of freedom" in these rallies ...

Oatka = thanks. I've yet to get at the shrugging stage. I do shake my head at times, though (only to myself).

Monkeyleg: Good for you! & what's shooting? ;) I haven't popped a cap in (?) ... I don't have a clue (5 months +?) ... been wrapped in this stuff. Didn't take the time to see where you're at (if you even have a link for personal info) ... we are getting quite a few hits at http://www.eaglesup.com/trt.html (goto forums) ... getting a lot of queries for different states & "areas" (not bordered by states=more to areas/locale) ... or e-mail me personally & I'll hook you up with whomever I've got at that area - gotta network on this to be effective. Please do.

Mr Locke (who I "know" personally - at least looked him in the eye & shook his firm hand - I "know" hin to be one of "us") - yup, we've the family bit & again, being a granddad (all kids outa the house/just me & My Baby), I have the "extra" time (between work, normal family life, ... (just off-air for an hour plus phone-discussing this very topic (heatedly, with my Daddy in the middle of this reply + about 20 e-mails dealing with Second Amendement issues + some federal land grab stuff/networking with "them," etc. - on & on) = yup, I've all kinds of "extra" time .... Yes! your family IS important.

No doubt about it AND you do have to spend that time to make ends meet.

However.

What is it you will leave your kids/your grandkids after you have worked your butt off to pay your taxes, to have a breather, to veg-out, to have a life, to keep abreast of what's happenin' to this country .... ?

Ever think that "they" are doing "this" to you so you can't participate in your government? That you cannot respond? That there is no longer any time to do so?

The conversation w/Dad ended up with: He was thoroughly investigated back in the 60's because his wife's sister was married to a Cuban national during the Bay of Pigs invasion scenario. Dad was, at the time, an NCO who did KC97 air-refueling of SAC B52 bombers (cold war state-of-the-art deterent). He, himself did nothing wrong (then or now - also did AR in KC-135s for the same B52s) .... In WWII, he was tail gunner in B17s over Europe (shall I go on?) .... still, he doesn't get it re "We, the law-abiding, are NOT the problem.

THAT fact IS THE CRUX of the argument, people.

It isn't us. That "they" attempt to make us so is THE definitive argument.

Never forget it. Never rest. Never!

Stick it to them at every obtuse statement they make demonizing you, at every chance, at every public venue, at every opportunity.

There is no other way that we will ever keep what is ours and take back what they hope to steal from us - the law-abiding.

As an aside, I'm getting rumblings that AIM/SAS in CO is now trying to "get" a permit to have their own li'l bit on Mom's Day (countering the MMM/bitches [yes, I know = said plainly w/emphasis]) .... they (SAS) are being shut down at every turn. Fair? Hardly.

Will we, TRT, respond regarding this? Du accord! Look to see 400+ on Denver's Mayor doorstep soon.

Film at 11!

Maybe we should just roll over and let them do it to us.

I got two different F-word phrases/pretty short.

First = freedom, the other F-word = you can guess.

Never again! Not now. Not ever. Never. Never again!

to all the TFLers:
if web news can be trusted Hillary Clinton will be at the MMM
I will bet Rosie O'donnell too

I will be there in Washingtoon DC, will you?

If we don't have an impresssive counter march in DC, then shame on you! Pissed at the Clinton's tyrany with S&W? Be there!
Want to be forced to see only smart guns on the shelf in 3 years? Stay home and keep on typing...

These are the times that try men's souls!

The Second Amendment Sisters are staging a counter rally to the well funded Million Mom March. The SAS counter rally is scheduled for the same time and place, Sunday, May 14 (Mother's Day) on The Mall in Washington DC, although a different part of The Mall.

The SAS, www.sas-aim.org , just came into being two months ago but is charging ahead with great vigor. But we could still use all the help we can get!

Please visit their website and see what the SAS is all about. While you are there, volunteer to help spread the word! My wife has already mailed out flyers, petitions and a press release to every club, gun shop and range in the state of Ohio that we could find a listing for. That mailing alone came out to over 400 sets of info packets. Our mailing costs alone were over $200.

My wife and I will be in Washington on Mother's Day. Why don't you make the trip and join us? Make it a mini-vacation! Washington should be pretty that time of the year!

Remember, just because you are not paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get you!

dz, "Stay home and keep on typing..."

Couldn't have said it better (or in fewer words ;))

The typing bit is important but not to the exclusion of the "other stuff."

cougar,

Y'all go, girls (& guys)! Kindred spirits here. Doubtful we'll go to DC (The Wife sure might - with Deb C/CO Coordinator).

I'm with you re expenses. Coupla thousand double-sided fliers passed out at gun shows (to boost the e-mail/phone list, get the word out, etc.) ... cost start to run up. Not to mention the time involved. (pant)

Worth it in the end - it has to be.

You might be surprised how many people will be in DC on Mother's Day :)

I agree, the time is long passed when we can afford to be quiet about our rights. But when I suggested this in an earlier post, I was met with the reply that we live in the greatest country in the world. I was disappointed by that. I KNOW we live in the greatest country, I'd like my kids and grandkids to be able to, too.

I can relate to the "nutcase" thing, maybe more so, because I am a woman and even my husband gives me the "looks". He likes guns a whole lot more than I do, but thinks I take things too seriously. (He's coming around tho!)

Do you have any suggestions? What do you think we need to do? What would improve the situation? Money helps, yes, and I do that, at least to the point I can afford and somewhat beyond that in certain cases. I've done my best to raise awareness of these issues among people I know, especially those who do not have access to the internet. I've raised my children to love freedom and to accept the responsibility that comes with it. I hope I've done a good job. You probably won't find me on a soapbox on an average day, but if I'm missing something else, let me know.

Four-hour trip for me to D.C., so I WILL be there on Mother's Day. It'll be good to take to the streets and protest the intrusions of the federal government once again in the nation's capitol.

Anyone from SE Virginia (or anywhere along the I-64/I-95 corridor that I'll run up to Washington) who wants to tag along is more than welcome to jump in the car with me. Just send me an e-mail (patriot_bob@yahoo.com) and let me know. If I get replies we'll talk about a preference for heading up on Saturday evening or first thing Sunday morning.

Bottom line: YOU take responsibility. The government isn't going after the rights of a "group", it's going after YOUR rights as a person. Don't let it happen.

Columbe,

Do take a look at the TRT site. A good front page and the forum is starting to get some good discussions going.

Colombe, if I didn't have a commitment that I absolutely cannot duck, I'd be there with you.

I sent a copy of Charlton Heston's speech (from another topic here) to my dad, and asked him if he still thought I was a "kook."
His response was no, but I ought to be spending more time focusing on business and getting wealthy, instead of chasing causes.

What he doesn't understand--and I will get him to understand--is that just about everything he's heard about guns is a lie.
And I _hate_ lies. I love to chase lies down and show them for what they are. If the anti's used the truth in their arguments I'd have more respect for them. But they can't, because the truth destroys their arguments.

So, I'll spend the rest of my days vaulting at windmills. So what?

Dick
