O/U or S/S on a budget

A possibility or an oxymoron?

The prices of most O/U and S/S guns are more frightening than looking down those twin barrels. I'd like to give my ole dad a nice gift, and wonder whether a proletarian's budget of <$1K can suffice for this rich man's trifle.

I looked at this:

but haven't found any for sale via google.

Ideally, I'd like to get a light S/S with two triggers, but an O/U with a selectable trigger would work as well.

Oh yes, 12 or 20 gauge would work. He likes and reloads both.

Your advice would be most appreciated.

Try looking on www.gunbroker.com. BUT, I have to warn you, nice double barrels, SxS or O/U are not inexpensive. Both of my Ithaca SxSs are in the $1K-$2K range. Beretta, Benneli, Perazzi, and the like are even more expensive. Fine doubles cost a fine price.

Check out cdnninvestments.com and see what they have in the Lanber line. You will have to download the catalog to be able to look at the guns, you can't do that on the site.
Lanber makes a pretty decent shotgun, that sells well in Europe but is not well known here. They have had a couple of ups and downs with different distributers, and have manufactured guns sold by at least one American gun company. I've had a Lanber for about 3 years and really like it. For more information check out their website lanber.net or visit the lanber forum over at shotgunworld.com
CDNN also has some pretty decent prices on a few other guns if they still have them in stock.

Ok, you said 1K, I take it that is short for a thousand. I love side by sides, and I just recenty purchased an old J.P. Sauer Royal for 1600. A couple of years ago I bought a fine L.C. Smith field grade for around $900 and you can still fined good elseys for around that figure.

In the new guns, I purchased a CZ 28ga Bob White for around $800 not long ago, and the 12 ga versions are cheaper, probably around $650. You might want to get a Dehan, they are a probably a little better then the CZ but both are made by Hugla in Turkey. My little 28ga has been a fine shotgun for the money.

However, my personal choice would be a slick old field grade L.C. Smith over the CZ in 12ga. Another good shotgun in your price range would be the used Browning side by sides, but most have single triggers, not selective, and I perfer double triggers in a side by side.

In the over and unders, if you are lucky you might find an old Browing Superposed or citori for around a thousand.

You can find cheaper side by sides, or over and unders but it is hard to find a nice side by side that really sings for much less and the price goes up from there.

Ithaca

Recently on a business trip noticed a couple of Ithaca SxS at a antique shop in Springfield OH just off Interstate for $600 each, they appeared to be in good shape. Believe they were new model field grade 12's

You have lots of choices, and will have good quality. Don't look for premium unless you want used, and even then, premium names at htat price wil be severly used.
For new guns, in O/U, the Lanber is an excellent value. Look also at CZ's. I happen to favor the DeHahn imports form Turkey named Huglu. Nice engraving and very sturdily built.
I don't know much about SxS. I have two Stoegers, a Coachgun and and an Uplander. The coachgun is heavily abused but works just great. The stocks on mine show very good grain, but the finish itself is not durable. But, what can you expect for under $300?

Remington has started to import Bakails nice guns for a small price. Bought my 14 year old one when they were still being imported by EAA. Fit and finish is comparatable to my old Fox 16 gauge.

I don't know where you are, but if you have an Academy Sports, take a look at the Yildiz. Made in Turkey, very sturdy, and nice looking. Do a search on this board, and you willl find mostly favorable comments. Over / Under, single trigger, barrel select, interchangeble choke tubes, for $389.00 is tough to beat! I do not own one, but I hope to soon.
