NYS question

My wife just got a job transfer to NYS in the Corning area. From what I gathered pistol permits are decently obtainable, but you have to have one first before buying or brining in your own pistols there. OK, so I can park them out of state with family until then. Someone was telling me that I would have to check them in through a gun store and pay them to transfer me my own guns. Can this even be remotely true? What the heck?

As far as i know...you have to establish residence for a significant period of time before you can apply for a permit. The permit application process can take anywhere from a few months to over half a year, so the answer to one of your questions is - YES, you must keep the handguns out of NYS for quite a while until the permit is approved.

I suggest contacting the county clerks office in the county that you are moving to to get the best answers to the transfer process once you get the permit.

Good luck and be safe.

Yes its true. A buddy of mine had to leave his pistols with his mom in OH while he waited to get his pistol permit. He found a local FFL who transfered all of his pistols (12 or 13 IIRC) for the price of one transfer $25 (but that was 15 years ago!).

The NYC and other downstate politicians ruin it for the rest of the state. Then you throw in the mayors of some of the bigger upstate cities and things are bleak as far as change goes. On the plus side if you are able to get a permit w/o restrictins its good to carry almost anywhere. There are some restrictions but not many. To answer the other question. The other posts are correct that an ffl transfer is the only way to bring the guns in.

NY does have its own AWB still in effect modeled on the 94 US AWB. But you CAN have over 10 round capacity mags if they are pre-ban.
