NYC Permit Holders!

This question is for an NYC permit holder. I have read/heard it is hard for a REGULAR person to get one. There must be a few regular people out there with one. And I'm asking about the unrestricted carry wherever you feel like it permit. If you're one of them I have a few questions for you.

The reason I'm asking is my company may be sending me up there to work for a while. They're putting me up in an all expense paid apartment ect.

1) I've read on packing.org about how to get it and it doesn't seem that hard just alot of paperwork
2) I've never lived in New York so there are no criminal records for them to check and for that matter none anywhere else either.
3) I have a permit for Georgia and have had for a long time.
4) I am no expert marksman but I am ex-military so I know a thing or two about how to take care of guns, safe storage, ect. Don't need to be treated like a five year old.
5) I don't plan on bringing an arsenal. A snub 38 should cut it.

What possible excuses can the give me not to issue it. There is nothing in my background that should prohibit it. I've just heard they are famous up there for giving the common man BS about it.

I used to live in NY and it is essentially impossible to get a permit without political influence, or possibly by making bribes/political contributions to certain officials. In NYC it is even more of a joke. Mafia members never had a problem getting concealed carry permits as private detectives or for other reasons, but the average honest citizen doesn't have a chance. Just remember the Bernard Goetz case where he was not not charged for shooting in self defense, but served hard time for possessing and carrying a handgun. I left NY many years ago and would not return there to live for any reason. The same holds for NJ, Conn and Mass. I can't carry legally here in Illinois but at least I can own and keep guns in my home for self defense without fear of harrassment or worse from the law.

I lived in upstate NY for school for a while and I have a friend who is a state trooper there. He said he could carry in NYC as a LEO, but that handguns are for the most part banned in the city.

Same goes for Boston over here. It's not that unusual in big cities.

I guess I could ....

1) Get a "throwaway piece" or several from a gunshow. Guns aren't registered in Georgia so they are hard to trace. Plus I know a few questionable characters that could get me an old .38 for a song.
2) If I have to use it then I'll use it ditch it and bail!

Those are really crappy laws they have there. I have ridden the subways there many times and I've seen some $hit at 2:00 in the afternoon! Are criminals getting permits? I doubt it.

I have sucessfully used my concealed weapon to stop a potentially violent situation. I was getting takeout two winters ago here in Atlanta and an officer had three guys up against a wall and they wern't cooperating very well. One turned and shoved the officer and I drew and said "get your ass on that wall now and obey the officer". (I was afraid they would disarm the officer and then have a heyday with a gun) He did when he saw me pointing a .38 snub at him; and the officer cuffed him and one other and told me where he kept another set of cuffs in his cruiser. Afterwards he thanked me for helping him. He DIDN'T EVEN ASK TO SEE A PERMIT. Gave me his card and told me if there was ever anything he could do for me to call him. I didn't hang around to explain things to the backup on the way.

That's how it is down here. I'll bet those NYPD A$$holes wouldn't appreciate it. Even if my firearm was legal they would probably invent some bogus charge for interfering with their work. I've read tons of stories on the internet about how much trouble that department has had. Not everyone that wants to carry a gun is looking for trouble. There are good guys out there!

That's my two cents, who knows maybe I won't get sent to NY anyway. Been there done that.

I have a NY State permit but can't get one for the city !! ...There was a recent shooting of two NYC cops by a crazy who had prior arrests but in each case was given a slap on the wrist. But he had a gun ...Become a criminal then you can carry !!

Even business carry is getting extremely hard to get. A state permit is not recognized in NYC. Mayor Bloomberg is as anti-gun as they come. Don't get caught with an unlicensed gun here as you will be vigorously prosecuted.

Applying for a target/premise permit is made as difficult as possible and you will be made to jump through hoops. NYC as well as state do not issue carry to out of state people, period! You cannot even touch a gun here unless you have a license. Transporting across state could be a journey to adventure.

If you are from out of town you will not get a carry permit unless you have some serious connections and even then you might have trouble! All in all you have a better chance at winning the Mega ball lottery than you do of getting any sort of permit as an out of towner!:(

We constantly hear of celebrities getting caught with guns and/or drugs in NYC and they never have jack s#!t happen to them. Look at that rapper piece of s#!t a few years ago -- he and his posse were involved in a shootout. Sean "puff crappy" Combs, it was. Did he do time? No.

How about that idiot hippie David Crosby (love his music; think he's a schmuck) -- he left a suitcase with a gun and drugs in it at his hotel room after leaving the place. When it was found and traced back to him, what ended up happening? He probably just had to pay a f'in fine.

atlctyslkr, don't kid yourself: there probably are ZERO "regular people" with a legitimate NYC carry permit such as you describe ("wherever, whenever you want"). To get one, you would HAVE to be either rich, corrupt, or connected, in which case that makes you obviously and by definition NOT "regular people."

What possible excuses can the give me not to issue it.

As a former NYC resident and target license holder, I can tell you you're asking exactly the wrong question. They don't need an excuse NOT to issue it, you need to give them an excuse TO issue it. If you're not a cop, PI or something like that you can get a carry license if you have a business that takes in a lot of cash, and you can only carry when you're actually transporting said cash.

When I had my target license, some time back, there was still a target license that "allowed" me to go directly from home to a range (and I HAD to belong to a club) whenever I wanted, gun locked up, unloaded, ammo separate, etc. Legally I couldn't even keep it loaded at home. I've heard the target license is no more and now you're only allowed to take the gun out a certain number of times a month. The application process took me nine months, the last stage of which was going to the PD and getting grilled, she was trying to get me mad so she could deny me (I heard about it beforehand and kept calm).

In NYC it's illegal to possess a cartridge for a gun that you don't have registered in NYC.

Suffice to say, you're not getting an unrestricted carry license in NYC, fuggetaboutit.

Oh yes, last I heard was that possession of an unlicensed gun in NYC was a mandatory year in jail.

One of the things I've always wondered is why aren't there more challenges to these laws? I can't get over these cities that tell you you can't have a handgun on your own private property. The only people that obey these laws are people with something to lose. I don't want to lose my job and everything I've worked for so I am forced to comply. That doesn't mean I have to like it. It's too bad no one has won a suit against the police for "failure to protect". Maybe some day.
