NRA Target Shooting Medals?

Hi,

New guy here getting back into target shooting. Back when I was a kid I was in an NRA target shooting program.

We showed up every Saturday and shot for a while then tried to earn a medal. It was very cool and fun! I forget the level I got to but I had a few bars under the medal.

When I bought a 1911 pistol I right away took a class with an NRA instrcutor but he was an active military and actually out of town now so I can't ask him but he showed me some medals and patches and I was left with the impression they still have the same program.

Trouble is I can't find it. I found the Winchester "rules" but no mention of the medals or how to find local schedule if offered. I have joined one range and there is one other private one nearby but neither appear to oaffer this type of program.

Any direction to an on-line source for more information would be most welcomed.

I'm in El Paso TX

Thanks,

Um, what kind of target shooting do you want?? Pistol, rifle, bullseye, IPSC, Highpower, skeet, trap, smallbore, sharp sticks, etc etc.

Hi,

Pistol target shooting, to start. I see some advanced styles but will see what appeals, what I have an aptitude for and then see.

It was the attached photo of medals -exactly- we would earn.

Thanks,

Well, in the HP rifle world, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) authorizes Excellence in Competition (LEG) matches. As you work your way toward a Distinguished Rifleman's badge, you can get points and medals. A few thousand folks have earned Distinguished Rifleman badges.

A very few folks who are very good all around marksmen, will be double-distinguished (pistol and rifle). I guess a few hundred folks have earned DD badges.

Its all on the web - look it up.

And Good Luck!

I think what you are looking for is the WINCHESTER/NRA MARKSMANSHIP QUALIFICATION PROGRAM.
The booklet is available from the Programs Material Center at the NRA web site. NRA.ORG. I believe it's about $8. The program outlines several course of fire and the minimum scores to achieve the marksmanship levels for awards medals you can purchase. It is a great way to improve your skill level on your own.
