From another board, by Lazamataz. Sounds like the NRA is taking a page from JFPO's book. Hope ir's reported in the papers (yeah, I know) so we can have a clip. How sweet it is!

NRA outshoots Million Mom March in PR war!

I have no way to back this up, but I have heard this on the radio.

It appears as though the NRA has dealt a crippling PR blow to the Million Moron March.

They have said, and I paraphrase Wayne LaPierre, "Let us put politics aside this week. Let's instead put gun safety in the forefront. The NRA will match 1,000,000 dollars if the Million Moms can raise 1,000,000 to promote gun safety and education. That is only one dollar per mom."

Not only is this a brilliant counter-stroke, taking the topic of legislation off the table and instead pushing education and safety, but it will also give lie to the false number of 1,000,000 moms. The actual 10,000 will have to come up with 1,000 each to avoid embarrassment.

Let's see, if I were the head of the Bell Campaign, (The real power behind this front group.) what would I do?

Suppose they call the NRA's dare, and offer to donate a millions dollars to "promote gun safety" with a gun "buy-back"?

YES! I like this a lot. I'm sure there's some downside I'm not seeing yet, but it sure sounds brilliant if we can just make sure it's widely known.

OK, I just thought of a downside--they've got all kinds of corporate sponsors. They don't need donations from the marchers to make that money--so the number of marchers will not become an issue, and when the NRA does match the million, then they've got 2 million dollars that the NRA and MMM somehow have to collaborate to figure out how to spend. :)

If they could figure a way to require that the donations come from the personal funds of actual marchers, that would be cool. But how possible is that?

I saw Heston in a TV ad this AM, offering the first million $ to establish gunsafety programs in schools. It was well done and to the point, and hard to misconstrue the intent - gun safety EDUCATION for all kids (Eddie Eagle or the equivalent) in any school. It was great to see the NRA actually doing something pre-emptive for a change, and it did sorta co-opt the MMM.

If there is a downside to it I cant think of it yet. Far as I'm concerned it puts things in their true perspective, which is probably why the offer will be declined.

There's no downside to promoting gun safety in schools. They will either have to put up or shut up. Or at least people will know that reducing accidental deaths is not their true agenda, but rather gun confiscation. The NRA wins either way. They have more funds than this already slated (from the friends of the NRA) for the Eddie Eagle program. Also if the MMM backs some type of gun safety program in our schools, what are all these anti-gun school administrators going to do? Continue to say no to Eddie Eagle because they are selling guns to kids? Be hard to do with the MMM on the NRA's side.

This is a good plan.

I like it! It is refreshing to hear NRA
do something creative for a change. I hope
their membership hits 4 mil by Nov.

The down side is who gets to define safety or education. If they define safety, the NRA money could be used in some lame a$$ buy back. If they define education as messages to stay away from guns cause they are evil... then our $$ could easily be used against us. If we define safety and education as learing the 4 rules... then we could take some baby steps forward. The ultimate question is whose definitions do we use.

Looks like the NRA is growing some smarts! In today's media saturated world, a PR initiative such as MMM can not be allowed to be unchallenged in the media without some sort of counter move. Clinton's spin machine developed and mastered the technique. It looks as thought the NRA read the playbook.

Now all we gotta do is get the Republicans in Congress to read the same book.

I like it, but if the media doesn't report it, it doesn't exist. The proverbial tree in the forest. On the other hand, if Wayne and Heston can get on the talk shows with this, we win once again.

BRILLIANT!

I think this is a "win-win" situation.

The NRA already puts this money into safety education so if the bluff is called, they are ready. In fact, it ain't no bluff, just a "put up or shut up".

If the Million Morons put the money up, then they are supporting the NRA. If the Million Morons don't put the money up, then they show their true agenda is gun confiscation, not child safety. Either way the Million Morons lose and the NRA wins.

If you watch the ad, the $1,000,000 is specifically said to be set aside for gun safety education in elementary schools.

What would really add some impetus to this is for a million NRA members to send in $1 towards this program. This would pre-empt any corporate donations by the MMM crowd, since the NRA's million comes from Honest-to-God members and not their "deep pockets" as somebody will surely claim.

The NRA could say "Our members were so overwhelmed by the idea, they contributed their own pocket money - will the MMMs do the same? Oh, by the way, HCI members are welcome to contribute also.".

Whenever the NRA does something good like this, we definately need to thank them and to encourage them to do more of this type of thing!

They had a response from the national MMM on Fox News a little while ago--she was saying that they think it makes no sense unless the NRA is willing to use the money for "our safety programs, for instance the registration of all handguns."

Moron. I have a feeling this WILL work for the NRA, 'cause this idiot doesn't get it. She was obviously caught off guard. I take back a little of my previous cynicism--it does sound like a good idea.

BTW, I've been seeing the MMM compared to MADD. IMO this is a phoney comparison. In general, MADD goes after drunk drivers--it doesn't go after cars or everyone who drives a car. And it lobbies for the strict enforcement of the law. OTOH, as near as I can tell, the MMM supports the same useless anti-gun garbage we've been hearing for years. They've just moved it to a new dumpster.

Sarah Brady Statement on National Rifle Association 'Gun Safety
Education' Challenge
To: National Desk
Contact: Handgun Control Inc. Web site: www.handguncontrol.org

WASHINGTON, May 8 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is the text
of a statement by Sarah Brady of Handgun Control Inc. on the
National Rifle Association's challenge for "gun safety" education:

"Less than a week before the Million Mom March, the National Rifle
Association is running ads that challenge March participants to
contribute to a fund for 'gun safety' programs in schools. Were it
not for the NRA and its extremist agenda, this nation wouldn't need a
Million Mom March in the first place.

"The NRA seems to think that teaching children 'gun safety' is the
only answer to protecting our children from gun violence. But 'gun
safety' classes won't save the 2-year-old who doesn't even realize
that a gun is a gun when he finds it under his parents' mattress.
Learning 'gun safety' won't stop the depressed 14-year-old from using
his father's unsecured gun to commit suicide. And 'gun safety'
classes won't stop the disturbed child who decides to take out his
anger on his classmates by taking a gun to school.

"Make no mistake about it: this NRA ad campaign is little more
than a publicity stunt designed to promote its own flawed program
and to distract the public from the real issue - passing the
common sense gun laws that the Million Mom March is calling
for and that this nation so desperately needs. We need licensing
of gun owners to make sure that they - the gun owners themselves
-- know the rules of gun safety and basic gun laws. We need
registration of gun sales to track down those who would sell guns
on the illegal market to criminals and youths. We need child
access prevention laws that hold adult gun owners responsible if
a child gets a hold of their unsecured gun. We need consumer
product safety standards for guns so that gun manufacturers can't
market weapons that 2-year-olds can fire and that lack even the
most basic safety features.

"By opposing all of these measures, the NRA is placing the primary
burden for responsible behavior on the child, not on the adult gun
owner or the gun manufacturer. The NRA pledges to contribute
$1 million to this gun safety education fund. At the same time,
it is planning to spend $15 million to make sure that candidates
who oppose reasonable gun laws get elected at all levels of
government.

"I will be on the Mall in Washington, D.C., on May 14, marching
proudly with the hundreds of thousands of mothers and others who care
about the safety of our communities and who know that we - the adults
of this country - are responsible for the safety of our children. If
the NRA were truly concerned about keeping kids safe from guns, they
would be supporting the Million Mom March Across America, instead of
engaging in a hollow publicity stunt."

Handgun Control, chaired by Sarah Brady, was founded in 1974
by Dr. Mark Borinsky and N.T. "Pete" Shields, two victims of
gun violence.

Based in Washington, D.C., HCI works with law enforcement, public
health, religious, and community groups across the country to
strengthen and protect federal, state and local gun control laws, but
does not seek to ban all guns. HCI has more than 400,000 members
nationwide, making it the nation's largest citizens' gun control
lobbying organization. More information about HCI and its sister
organization, the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, can be found on
the Web site at www.handguncontrol.org. Handgun Control is proud to
be one of the primary supporters of the Million Mom March.

If my reading between the lines is correct, They turned down the NRA's offer. They seem to think that if the "right" law is passed, no one will ever see a gun again. Idiots!

This shows that they won't even cooperate to help prevent one child's accidental death. It definitely reveals their true agenda. It's not about saving lives, it's about getting rid of guns.

Thanks Liberarian, I just barfed my lunch...
