NRA letter with JPFO comments, possibly of interest to some/many.

Interesting read Alan. I won't be the first one to say something nasty about either group and start the thread in a bad direction so I'll just say interesting read and thanks for sharing. :)

According to the Letter, NRA supports “certain federal laws relative to firearms.”

What part of the Second Amendment’s declaration, that that “the right of the
people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,” gives the federal
government the power to enact laws “relative to firearms”?

I guess the JPFO supports the rights of criminals and violent people to own firearms?

It is well known that JPFO wants to abolish BATFE. If the anti-gun zealots during the Clinton era had not enforced so many unconstitutional laws, the BATFE would not be so bad. Every organization has it`s flaws .

WSM MAGNUM & Wild Alaska:

Quite likely, very objectionable, POSSIBLY unconstitutional legislation would be a better term, as said legislation has not been declared constitutionally wanting by the courts. ATF's tactics, or to be more correct, the BATFE's tactics have been found wanting, if dismissed cases can be taken as an indicator. I believe the same can be said for the old BATF, as it used to be known. Then there was some of the foolishness perpetrated by the ATTU of IRS, however this goes back many years.

In any case, just as their failure to check the egregious tactics of the BATFE is a blot on the face of the Congress, their lack of checking could be descdribed as tantamount to being their stamp of approval for/on the above mentioned tactics, tampering with evidence and harrassment of individuals for instance, it is The Congress that has enacted some really terrible legislation. Of course, the antics of the enforcement agency, ATTU, ATFD, BATF and currently BATFE haven't helped much.

Regarding JPFO, they have an ax to grind, plainly it revolves around the fact that they do not care for the BATFE, as it's currently named. One can readily tell where JPFO is coming from, what their peeves are, things that one can agree or disagree with. With the federal firearms enforcement agency, which as above noted has appeared under various names, one might well wonder as to "where these people are coming from", given their tactics and actions.

As to the NRA, I've been a LIFE MEMBER since 1973, and a yearly and 5 year member before that. Notwithstanding my long term membership in that organization, I still wonder about some of the things they do, as well as other things they didn't do.

Probably depends on how the terms "criminals" and "violent people" are defined.

people who have been found guilty of felony by a trial? People who have used a firearm to injure or kill another person in the act of committing a crime against the laws of this nation and have been found guilty or adjudicated as mentally insane.

If the JPFO wants to be rid of the BATFE then perhaps they should be in the halls of Congress lobbying the folks that can make it happen instead of badgering the NRA who has no powers to change the law.

If they have been found guilty of a violent felony by a trial, they should be in prison, not out in public buying firearms.

After they've served their sentence, are they also to be denied their basic human right to self-defense for the rest of their life? If they can't be trusted with a firearm, how can they be trusted to be out of prison?

But oh, I forgot, all the people who were caught with the wrong kind of dried plant are taking up the beds with 55 year prison terms, so there's no room left for violent criminals.

I have said before on this board that a felon should be able to apply to have those rights reinstated if he has proven himself to be a good citizen after he has paid his dues to society. Hpowever, there are just as many who have been found guilty and still continue the criminal lifestyle once they finish a sentence.

They do not deserve the right to own and bear arms.

"Violent Felons"

The GCA of '68 made into law prohibiting felons from being able to vote or own firearms.
Someone convicted of ANY felony (embezzlement, fraud, attempted murder, possession of substances the government says you may not possess) is prohibited from owning firearms.

The big problem as I see it is this: There are two camps.

Camp one says "No Compromise, not now not ever." The problem with this view is that the prevailing political sentiment can overwhelm it, and pass a REALLY BAD law.

Camp two says "We must live with a bad law, because if we don't we'll get a REALLY BAD law."

Then you have the NRA, of which I used to be a life member on the quarterly pay system and was well along to being a paid up life member.

I guess from my perspective they should spend more time in camp one then camp 2.

bradleyt1776:

Re that "bad law" you mentioned, seems that bad laws can be repealed. As for "you will get a worse one", such can be resisted, and should be.

Possibly, the NRA of which I'm a LIFE MEMBER should have considered that point more carefully than they might have.

Which unconstituional laws?

I'm starting to think that the only reason you post here it to advertise for your business. When you're not being uncivil and calling almost everyone a "kook" who doesn't agree with you, you're showing some amazing loyalty to the federal government. Your statement implies that you don't think that ANY of the federal laws are unconstitutional. Should I be surprised? Those federal laws keep a LOT of competition away from your business. Since I can't imagine you get THAT much extra business as a result of posting here, it's odd how much time you've spent here. You seem to like familiarity which explains your loyalty to federal gun control laws as well as nearly five thousand posts (most of which are empty one liners though).
