NRA Goes After Senator Manchin

Made numerous calls to the NRA-ILA in re senator Manchin and his A rating. Was told the NRA would downgrade Manchin's A rating when he runs for re-election: That is much too late. i and others have tried to make the case that the NRA is keeping Manchin A rated while he uses that rating to push gun control. It would cost millions in NRA donations to counter Manchin's gun control proposals.

The NRA has finally gone after senator Manchin.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- After years of showering U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin with stellar ratings and campaign endorsements, the National Rifle Association targeted the West Virginia Democrat with a TV ad launched Wednesday over his continuing push for broader gun buyer background checks.

The new ad urges viewers to phone Manchin's office and tell him "to honor his commitment to the 2nd Amendment." It alleges Manchin "is working" with President Barack Obama, who is deeply unpopular in West Virginia, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a vocal advocate of gun control laws.

Yes, we must hold politicians accountable for their actions and this gentleman should be at the top of the list. I hope the men and women of West Virginia understand that those who attack one freedom will ultimately attack others.

Yep thats a hit.
NRA needs to be careful though. If it attacks moderate supporters it will in turn lose support. Being in the minority in a minority party is not the ideal way to maintain its goals.

Frankly it should be heavily supporting the Democratic Congress members that voted against it and getting out the vote to support them. Show them the positive power of support as well.

I've made some calls, and I want them to change his rating to an F. No in-between.

Why? Two reasons. First off, he's not only supported but proposed gun control. Second, we need to send a firm and unmistakable message.

I don't disagree with any particular point here, but I don't think it's a stretch to assume the media will paint the NRA as extremists for this. "They're even going after an A-rated NRA supporter just because he proposed reasonable background checks!"

That would be nothing new though.

I have a great deal of hope for 2014. I think the backlash is going to be pretty decent. In my lovely neighbor state of Colorado (I have not written them off like many gun rights supporters, since I want to move there), supporting gun control triggered four recall petitions, two of which got sufficient votes to initiate recalls. A recall has never happened in state history.

I also agree with zincwarrior that treading softly is the key. Alienating other moderate supporters could be bad.

Connecticut just elected a pro-gun Representative in a special election. First Republican to win that district in 40 years. I think the 2014 backlash may be substantial and it may be worse in places that overreacted the worst.

On the flipside we need to remember there are a lot of politicians that support the Second Amendment who are going to be attacked. For instance I have seen stories reporting that Kelly Ayotte is being targeted and I’m sure others are as well. We need to remember our friends just as much as we remember our enemies.

Has the NRA changed Manchin's grade at all yet? I ask because no mention of changing his grade was made in the article and in a thread sometime ago a poster said he'd called the NRA about this issue and was informed that the grades wouldn't be reviewed until closer to the next election.

I could perhaps see a point to not immediately downgrading Sen. Manchin in order to give him a chance to re-evaluate his position prior to the next election (the current ad campaign is probably meant to help him "see the light"). If, however, he continues to double down on it like he has so far, then I agree that he should be downgraded to F.

Manchin strikes back. His point:

NRA leadership is out of control and doesn't reflect the membership that wants gun control.

His commercial was first presented on Morning Joe. That's a show that wants not only UBGs but bans on everything except duck killing Biden specials.

Seems pretty pathetic to me. He jumped on the gun ban bandwagon and now is trying to justify it but still is a 'hunter' and supports gun rights.

Mark him well !!!

Manchin is using his membership in the NRA to attack the NRA. It's time to can Manchin from the NRA and award him the coveted F- rating reserved for gun control leaders.
He clearly lied to the citizens of WV prior to the last election and they still voted him in. I don't live in WV but certainly did not buy his lies, then and especially now. He keeps stating that most gun owners want stricter gun controls and his last example was on extended background checks. That is far from the truth as that bill was flawed and again, judge for yourself and read what was in there. You would not believe it, let alone, live with it. ....

Be Safe !!!

Tom Servo I've made some calls, and I want them to change his rating to an F. No in-between.

Fully concur. I remember his Pro Gun ads when he was up for election 4 years ago. He has shown is true blue colors.

In the state of Arkansas, Pryor is up for reelection and he voted against the bill.......however, right after his first election, he voted for the assault weapons ban and confirmed antigun SCOTUS justices. He pro gun only arounf election time. Hopefully Arkansans will vote him out.

The problem is, that about every Governor that WV has had, (and now Manchin's moved up to a Senator), has became, or was already, crooked as a barrel of fish hooks. I live just across the muddy Ohio from Huntington, and know what the typical folks think, and they don't like what Manchin did, at all. WV is a sportsman state, with a gazillion hunters, and gun owners, too numerous to count.

When it comes to re-election, he needs to watch, or he'll find himself unseated.

Agree the NRA should downgrade him. Any politician suggesting more gun control cannot be pro 2nd Amendment. Mutually exclusive.

Speaking of downgrades, they should knock Harry Reid down too. He's enjoyed bipartisan support here in Nevada for years because he's widely seen as pro 2nd Amendment. Not anymore...

As an aside, in the last election cycle, the NRA refused to endorse Reid or his opponent, which I thought was odd. Turns out they didn't want to favor Reid over his A+++ opponent, but if Dirty Harry had lost, guess who was next in line to be Majority Leader? None other than Chuck Schumer... and that would have been REALLY bad...

I can't tell what Harry Reid is doing. I think he might be playing chess while the rest of us (both sides) are playing checkers -- and he's plotting 5 moves ahead.

I give Tom Servo's commet an A+++ and Senator Manchin a F----

We must send a message before it's to late for words( I hope it's not to late)

I think Reid is playing both sides; I can't tell which side he's really for. Did you notice how everything failed in the Senate even tho' the democrats thought all the stars were aligned for them? He very well could have orchestrated that. Maybe.

Reid is for maintaining his party's majority in the Senate. Whatever does that is what he is for.

Not that this is a big insight.

Shotgun Joe claims that 5 progun senators have 'contacted' him saying that they want to get on the gun control bandwagon. They are just waiting for the chance.
