Oh, all you vets should like this. You've just been reduced to a mere voting strategy.

107th CONGRESS

1st Session

H. R. 62
To amend title 5, United States Code, to establish election day in Presidential election years as a legal public holiday by moving the legal public holiday known as Veterans Day to election day in such years, and for other purposes.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

January 3, 2001
Ms. JACKSON-LEE of Texas introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Government Reform

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A BILL
To amend title 5, United States Code, to establish election day in Presidential election years as a legal public holiday by moving the legal public holiday known as Veterans Day to election day in such years, and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. ESTABLISHMENT OF ELECTION DAY IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION YEARS AS A LEGAL PUBLIC HOLIDAY.

Section 6103(a) of title 5, United States Code, is amended--

(1) by inserting `the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November in 2004 and each fourth year thereafter, and' after `Veterans Day,'; and

(2) by inserting `in any other year' after `November 11'.

SEC. 2. SENSE OF CONGRESS REGARDING TREATMENT OF DAY BY PRIVATE EMPLOYERS.

It is the sense of Congress that private employers in the United States should give their employees a day off on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November in 2004 and each fourth year thereafter to enable the employees to cast votes in the Presidential and other elections held on that day.

I'm sorry, but I don't think this is right! it's an insult to veterans!

This is a terrible insult to Veterans. They deserve their own day, apart from any other. Is one day a year enough to celebrate the sacrifices our brave men and women have made throughout the years? I think not, but combining it with an election takes away from it even more.

This is also an insult to those of us who work, have kids, hobbies, friends, activities, etc., etc. and still find time to vote each and every election, including primaries and issue-only special elections!

This is pandering to the people who are too lazy to make the time to vote. The polls are usually open for at least twelve hours. Voting is an important duty that all citizens share. It should be given a place of importance in their lives once a year. That's not too much to ask.

I can't think of a better way to celebrate Veterans day than by having them vote in good people and vote out bad ones.

The politicians are the ones who send them into harms way,
after all.

Of course, the people who would be more likely to vote would be liberal state, city, county and federal employees who would get that day off. Veterans, specifically would likely not benefit much and have their ability to vote increased.

I`ve never had a problem voting and I`ve always worked. This bill seems to be an answer to a question that no one asked. How do these chowderheads get elected..??!!

Large voter turnouts = Good
Small voter turnouts = Bad

If you accept the two equations above (I don't), then this move makes sense. Make it easier to vote and more people will vote.

Although, even at that, it would likely backfire. If voting day were a holiday, more people would go on vacation (away from home) and not show up to the polls.

As for me, I think that informed voters are to be preferred over large numbers of voters. It's not difficult to vote now, if it matters to you. If it doesn't matter that much to you, I don't want your uninformed vote cancelling my informed one.

The odds are, they will spin this as a compliment to the veterans. What better way to honor our vets than to encourage everyone to perform their most important civic duty on Veterans Day?

America is a land where a citizen will cross the ocean to fight for democracy -- and won't cross the street to vote in a national election. -- Bill Vaughan

I'm with you, pax. Low voter turnout is A Good Thing (TM). Fewer idiots voting.

While I'm not in favor of only franchising male land-owners, as was originally the case in many places, a few restrictions on who can vote would not be a bad thing. For instance, if you are on public assistance (welfare), you should not have a vote. If you can't run your own affairs, why should you have a say in running public affairs?

One concern of the logic behind that approach is who would be more inclined to vote if that law were passed. Since most employees in private industry don't get the day off, the most likely increase would be in state and federal employees, who already get far more holiday time than others anyway. Bad Idea for those interested in protecting freedom.

SteveB:

By calling Sheila Jackson-Lee a "chowderhead", you have (unintentionally, I'm sure) insulted honest chowderheads all over the world. :)

Ms. Jackson-Lee has authored or supported as many or more assinine and/or inane pieces of legislation as her pal and confidant, Maxine Waters. Card-carrying members of the left end of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Brian, you're right.

Only the people who actually get the day off would benefit.

Of course, employers already MUST give their employees time off to vote. That's law. So, this bill does only two things:

Reduces the status of those men and women who have served our country to nothing.

Other than above, nothing.

And you're right, too, John.

If you did a search of all the bills this particular nitwit has sponsered, your jaw would drop. She is an idiot.

What cheeses me off the most about this concept:

is that our government officials are apparently completely unclear as to why that day is Veteran's Day.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the guns fell silent, ending the most horrific war yet engaged in by mankind. For the common soldier who bled and frequently died there, it may be the most horrific war of all time. Read Eye-Deep in Hell, available at your nearest bookseller if you need a refresher course. To honor veterans of later wars, Armistice Day became Veteran's Day, but that changes the significance of the date not a whit.

My great-grandfather never returned from Flander's fields. It would disgrace his memory to cheapen this holiday as some political stunt.

Democrat politicians took a pounding during the post-election fiasco when democrat operatives were elated that they were successful in throwing out military ballots. I thought that was a disgusting act and figured they would take it on the chin.

Looks to me like democrats have done some polling and found out there it still outrage out there. If you have to engage in symbolism like letting the military vote why not make it really assinine symbolism by voting on a day devoted to the military.

Just more proof to me the democrats are imploding. Problem is the spinelessrepublicans are no more fit to rule than the democrats.

Trent Lott has got to go!

Ha! ...A national holiday to get you to vote. Back during the last election, there were all those "Get out the vote" TV commercials and ads. How foolish. If you are someone who needs a holiday or a TV ad to get you to vote, I don't want you to vote. I don't want your stupid vote to cancel out mine!

Election Day

Just a thought I'd like to pass on, something I heard recently about election day changes.

We should change election day to April 16th. Then there would be tax cuts, there would be lower budgets due to cuts, which would lead to less government and there would be less inclination to give themselves midnight raises.

I think it would work very well.

Thoughts?

Sheila is a joke and an idiot. I don't think she has ever introduced any bill that made it out of committee. She keeps coming up with the dumbest and/or weirdest law ideas. I know many people who live in her district and none of them will publicly admit to voting for her.

I've always thought the best way of handling politicians love of spending money to to have one (count 'em, one) tax rate applicable to everyone and everything. Have that tax rate voted on just before congress breaks for campaigning. Then when Victor Voter goes to the booth, he clearly knows the cost of electing a particular politician.

Since I'm obviously in a fantasy world, let do away with withholding.

Waitone, what about moving the filing date for taxes from April 15th to the week before election day? Another idea I've had that won't go anywhere is to eliminate taxes being withheld from paychecks by the employer. Instead, the employee would have to sit down every month and write that big check to the government, just as the self-employed have to do. Having to do that really opened my eyes 14 years ago.

Monkeyleg you stole my line!!!

We should either move election day to April 15 or move tax day to the first tuesday in November. THAT would slow down the growth of government.

Shelia Jackson-Lee was born an idiot and grew bigger. She is the member of Congress who, when the Mars Rover landed and was looking around, asked NASA if it was going to take pictures of the flag that the astronauts planted. (Funny, I thought that the flag was placed on the MOON not Mars.)
