now, how about this Steyr S40?

I've read a lot of great things about the Steyr M40, but in the interests of concealed carry I think I might just opt for the S40 -- except it doesn't seem to be out yet. The fellow at GSI with whom I spoke seemed to think it should be a month or two (approximately, esp. given that he wouldn't be surprised at delays.) Does anyone have any info on this? Does anyone think it might have growing pains of the type the M40 did? BTW, this will be my first gun purchase, so I'm thinking about just getting an H&K USP40C, what with the amount of time it's been out, its reputation and the availability of the kind of leather I'd like.

The Steyr M's are great, I suspect the new S series will not run into most of the initial M40 issues (Forum member PeteJ88 would be able to answer this better). Although, if you decided on an HK compact- I wouldn't argue with that decision, great gun (not the most compact gun though).

I'm a little hot to run out and buy something right away, but then I don't want to buy more than one pistol, not anytime soon, at least. I keep thinking about all the stock I could be buying instead. :-)

it's just that my brother (who's set on the S40) and I like the idea of being able to share ammo, just in case the situation ever called for it.

The S-40 is certainly intriguing but you can't go wrong with an H&K USP40C. I've had mine for over 2 years now and after 5000 rounds I can highly recommend it. Holsters are easy to find because they will also fit into most holsters for the Glock 23.

The way I see it traitorjack, you are going to end up with an HK or a Steyr. Hey, there are WAY WORSE situations to be in in life! Both are superb guns, I'm waiting to get an M357. HK's are rock solid, (expensive) but proven. Steyr's S series shouldn't have any growing pains because they have all been worked out in the M series.

Shoot safe, and let us all know what you think of it when you get it.

The S40 looks really nice and compact. Great little package.

The USP "compact" is not really very compact. I don't see the two in the same catagory at all. The USP is a good gun though. It does not float my boat due to it's bulkiness, but it is a good gun.

Just my thoughts.

DerGlockenpooper has a good point. The size of the USP compact is probably closer to the Steyr M40.

There is really no good idea of what is a "compact" handgun that I can tell. The Sig 229 and Steyr M40 are about the same size as the Glock 23(compact) and HK USP Compact. I feel that the right name for the Glock 23 and USP Compact is "Midsize". The 229 and M40 are also what I would call midsized, not full size handguns. Does anyone have any rational for how they determine this? I suppose Glock made the full size, then compact, then had to come up with sub-compact. If the average guy can get all four fingers on the grip I don't see the gun as "compact".

Not a big deal, but it was very confusing before I became familiar with the size of various handguns. A standard size for fullsize, compact, etc. would be nice.
