Not bear, not moose, but squirrel

So, I've made some friends at school who live in the lower state and I've heard tell of many squirrel hunts going on. Now, here's my question: when hunting squirrel, does one have to adhere to the same ammo cap that other hunters have to follow?

?

Not sure what you mean. Are there certain laws in your state that your referring to?

If you mean the rounds you have in your magazine, yes you need to follow all small game rules in your state.

I think I know what you are refering to and in the Midwest, there are no such restictions. I have also hunted them in Alabama and nothing was ever mentioned. We hunted with 39's and full tudes.

Be Safe !!!

I forgot to mention I live in Illinois. I was thinking of hitting up my friend's dad to go with him hunting squirrel sometime and was wondering if I'd have to block the tube in my 500A down to 3 rounds.

No sir and I have never seen this question asked, or presented by our DNR, in reference to squirrels. Take a .22 and you will like it ... :)

in NJ when hunting with a .2 on private land you can only have 3 rounds total in the gun. You can have a 10 rd magazine but it must only have 3 loaded at any given time (or 2 in the mag +1 in the chamber)

but then again...who hunts with a rifle in NJ...NO ONE....

Same in PA. You use to have to limit small game guns to 3 total bullets in a gun. And Gun needed to be plugged.

Why???

Same in PA. You use to have to limit small game guns to 3 total bullets in a gun. And Gun needed to be plugged.

I don't understand this. Does having more then three rounds give the hunter an unfair advantage? What if you encounter an overly aggressive squirrel and threee .22 shots fail to stop it? You could be mauled!:D

I was thinking of using a .410 cylinder insert with .410 bird shot to squirrel hunt if I go, I don't have any .22's other than a key holing Iver Johnson.

I just don't want a warden stumbling on us and checking my 500, loading 5 shells into the tube and then me going "er... I use an insert that holds 1 round"

Check the regulations for your state. If there are restrictions, it shouldn't be hard to find.

When I lived in Florida, they went to a squirrel restriction for one season, for one area, for only the one year. You were only allowed a single-shot pistol; with iron sights; no more than an 8 inch barrel; and only .22 Short, BB cap, or CB short ammo (exactly the same as some of the 'coon seasons). Like I said... it only lasted one season, in the one experimental area - too many hunters complained (mainly, about the single-shot pistol requirement - they're not as common as they used to be).

Not sure about the laws where you live, here in Texas, we dont have any ammo capacity restrictions regarding squirrel hunting.
When I hunt Squirrel with a Squirrel Dog, my buddies and I use Shotguns, with short brass shells.
When Still hunting for Squirrel, I prefer a Scoped .22 Rimfire Rifle.
Enjoy your Squirrel hunt, its alot of fun.

Depends on the weapon and the overlapping of seasons on other game.

If you are hunting squirrel when there is another game season open that has restrictions on loading capacity, beware.

Thinking of shotgun, not 22.
