Not an AR fan

Am I the only gun guy that's not a fan of AR style rifles? I don't think they're bad, and I've shot them for work and stuff, and I'm a passable marksman with one, but I just never got into them as much as most seem too. Anyone else on the same page?

I have one, and am quite pleased with its sub-MOA groups, but it will never really be a true pet. I guess mostly because plastic and pistol grips just don't do anything for me that matters. Some of it is from many a decade of conventional critters before ARs ever showed up.

Not bad as a truck gun, though...

But, I figure that those who like them oughta have them. What other folks like isn't really my business.

I only own weapons that I like. And yes the AR15 is one of them. However, everyone has different taste and what you like might be different from the next Joe but I'm pretty sure someone else shares your opinion.

If someone gave me one, and I had to use it and could not sell or trade it I would not accept it. They are very clumsy compared to a well stocked traditional rifle.

I appreciate my AR for what it is, a fine battle tool. I've got one that mirrors the M16A2 I carried for many years, doing Uncle Sam's bidding. Even during my LEO career, I qualified with it yearly, and still do. It's a tool at my disposal and one that I am very familiar with. But I'm not necessarily a fan. I enjoy shooting it, but I don't consider it a hobby weapon. It's just a service rifle.

Give me a good bolt, lever action or single shot, an unobstructed firing line and a pile of ammo and I'm happy as a pig in slop.

I also have no desire to own an AR rifle. I'm not ready for Buck Rodgers yet. They may be functional but are certainly not pretty like a bolt action. And I don't want to rely on a semi-auto. This is just my opinion.

I think it is good though that many people like these things as the more that are in civilian hands the harder it is for the anti-gun nuts to pass legislation to get rid of these evil "assault" rifles that go running around on their own killing people.

I held off 10 years before I bought one. Then it was a matter of months before I bought a second. Two very different guns. One's a heavy barrel varmiter, the onther a lightweight carbine.

AR's can be many different things to many different people. "Barbies for men."

I wouldn't consider myself a "fan" of the AR type rifle. They are easy to work on, easy to handle and shoot, carry a lot of ammo (if that's important to your situation), and are accurate enough for most purposes. I use one as needed but don't feel a great fuzziness for them.

They will never replace a Mauser sporter or a Rem 700 for me but they do have their place.

An AR is what you make it. Seems like most of the people in here that don't like them, apparently do not like the flexibility they offer.

Due to the modular nature of an AR-15, one gun can be turned into one of many other styles just by using some basic tools (or none at all in many cases) to change the look and purpose of a weapon.

if i had to choose a autoloading rifle it sure as heck wouldnt be an AR of any type it would be a mini or for the 30cal would be a m14 or m1

a AR fan ?, A gun nut yes. I like them all some more than others.
But I dont have to sit on my hands to keep from clapping :D:D

It's hard to say what an AR is now - it's a broad category now of rifles that resemble the M16. I mean - you can't even say that they're 5.56 right? There are AR variants in 9mm, 10mm, 7.62... Grendel etc...

I never liked the design that blew carbon and crud back into the action.

I had to qualify with m16A1s regularly and I did compete with them over the years, and I just found them to be inferior rifles compared with other designs.

I know that Knights Armament makes the M110 SASS which is an AR design that has superb accuracy. In general though, I think there are more accurate rifles to be had for the amount of money that people shell out for ARs.

I got so used to cleaning the M16 that I was amazed the first time I cleaned a normal rifle - I was looking for burnt carbon everywhere and basically the rifle was clean. M16s are really dirty weapons. The gas pistons have made this better - definately an improvement.

On the other hand - I am really interested in those 5.56 pistols that are around. Something about having a 6" barreled 5.56 pistol is appealing to me. I know it would create huge fireballs, but maybe that's part of the appeal. :)

For me - if I were to get a combat type rifle I wouldn't get a rifle in 5.56 or an AR. I would get a 7.62 and probably an M1A, maybe with that SAGE stock configuration. But I wouldn't get an AR.

See, I don't hate it or think it's a bad rifle. I'm just "meh" about it. I've used them and get the whole Barbie thing (I like 1911's and you can modify the heck out of those). I think it's because it's so toy-like to me.
I'm with MOA, I like the older style Garands and M1A. They just feel more solid to me. And yeah as a SHTF rifle, an M4 would be a good light choice. I don't think people shouldn't like them, I was just curious if anyone else felt the same way about them. I can't see myself owning one, or at least going out and buying one. If one of you wants to send me one, maybe I'll change my mind.;)
We do have an AR-10 here at work that I haven't tried yet. Maybe a .308 will change my mind.

Uncle Sam once gave me one, and after a time I gave it back. I say I don't want another one with my own money, but I remember saying that I'd never buy a 223. But I did buy a 223, and I like it. So...I probably won't buy an AR15, but who knows. Truth be known, I don't think anybody would buy one if it wasn't the 'today' military weapon. And yes, I include you guys that are into the long range military type shooting. Some Walter Mitty types buy it because it's tacticool and some buy it because they want to compete with it. Nobody buys it because Honest to God it's the latest great thing since the 03A3. It's a peashooter, but it is the "Military" weapon of today. Yell at me if you wish, but some part of you knows I'm right. And heck, I might eventually buy one....

I like them a lot. To help pay the bills, I sold the two that I owned when my wife was getting her masters degree. Haven't bought another one & don't miss them. My preferred type of hunting rarely offers much of a follow up shot so my bolt actions do what I want. Always found policing my brass to be annoying. Regardless, none of this precludes me from liking them. As of right now there are things I need more than a $1k black rifle but someday i'll have another just because I can.

I'm not a fanatic for the AR, but I'm not a hater either. Good rifles, modular and all, but just not my thing. I've always gravitated towards things that are a little different, and to me ARs are a bit cliche.
Everyone shoots a 1911, I have a CZ75. Everyone rides a Harley, I have a Victory. Everyone wheels a Jeep Wrangler, I have a Liberty.

Although I am not an AR fanboi, I have warmed up to them.
Accurate, light, reliable.
I don't know if your work involves firing you AR with mud in the chamber, but mine doesn't and it works fine.
I've found that if the ergonomics are good for you, then you tend to have a good working relationship with your AR. If you don't, then, they're just another rifle.

Full Disclosure: I've never had an AK, so I don't automatically fall to the other side of the teeter-totter and get giddy for AKs.

I guess you're human with your own unique sets of likes and don't likes.

edit: I wish I'd known about that Oliver Wilde quote above.
