William Pryor Approved by Senate

(CNSNews.com) - In a vote of 53 to 45, former Alabama Attorney General William Pryor was confirmed by the Senate Thursday to sit on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Conservatives applauded Pryor's confirmation after more than two years of Democratic filibustering.

"Once again the American people have seen that the Democrats' phony filibustering was nothing more than a politically motivated attempt to keep the majority who wanted to confirm this fine judge from casting their votes," said Concerned Women for America chief counsel Jan LaRue.

"He now takes his rightful place back on the 11th Circuit by official confirmation after having been placed there by a previous recess appointment," said LaRue.

"Hopefully the Democrats have learned that their devious attacks on Judge Pryor's 'deeply held beliefs' were exposed as a mean-spirited attempt to impose an unconstitutional religious test on a public official. The 'No Judges of Faith Need Apply' mentality should never rear its discriminatory head again in the U.S. Senate," said LaRue.

Liberals like the Human Rights Campaign strongly condemned Pryor's confirmation.

"The American people deserve justice, not prejudice," said HRC President Joe Solmonese, who criticized what he said was Pryor's "demonstrated track record of bias against the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans."

"Anyone who lets their own personal prejudices shape their decisions from the bench poses a threat to the rights of all Americans," added Solmonese.

"Underscoring the president's drive to pack the courts with agenda-driven, partisan activists, Bill Pryor's record has something to offend nearly every constituency," said Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron.

"He has been an outspoken opponent of worker and consumer rights, reproductive rights, environmental protections, the separation of church and state, gay and lesbian rights, and the rights of the accused," Aron said.

"He has also been a staunch advocate for big tobacco, states' rights and the gun lobby. His elevation to a lifetime seat is a blow to rights and protections for ordinary Americans," Aron added.

Translation: He's an intrusive Puritan who thinks I'm a second-class citizen/baby factory, but he likes guns, so I'm supposed to like him.

Pardon my lack of enthusiasm, but my support for gun rights is beginning to require me to embrace some pretty awful bedfellows. :(

He's an intrusive Puritan who thinks I'm a second-class citizen/baby factory, but he likes guns, so I'm supposed to like him.

Actually, I don't see that anywhere.

He "opposes reproductive rights" according to the same people who think the M82A1 Barret shoots down sattelites from orbit.

That may well mean "opposing partial-birth abortions" or "requiring that 14-year old girls notify their family when getting their abortion." [I oppose the latter, support the former, I am sure that according to those people I hate reproductive freedom too].

Tamara: According to what I read, the man opposes abortion and Roe v. Wade.

In practice, however, the only actions he has taken on the issue were to defend Alabama laws against partial-birth abortions and to defend laws requiring doctors to speak to women before they abort their child/embryo/fetus/whatever you callit.

Simple belief in the RKBA does not a friend of freedom make.

There are plenty of people who firmly believe in the Right of the whiteanglosaxonprotestantteetotallingheterosexualmarriedtaxpayingnonsmokingchurchgoing People to Keep and Bear Arms. They might be a little shakier on the rights of, say, ethnic and religious minority youths from foreign countries who are self-professed "Socialist Libertarians" to do likewise.

Politics, of necessity, makes for strange bedfellows, but at least have a good look around the boudoir before you turn out the lights.

Strange things happen when folks get appointed to the SCOTUS....
seems a few conservative presidents appointed the perfect judge and then the justice made strange decisons that were not conservative in nature....

crap happens......

Former socialist, Tamara. Wisened up a little bit since our last argument. :D

Furthermore I would request you to point out to me who you consider to be a "friend of freedom" [in the definition of supporting all the Bill of Rights, for everybdy] in the current US Government [with the noble and useless exception of Ron Paul]. Right.. they don't exist.

Someone who supports both the 2nd and 10th amendment is already a site better than most - even if he does oppose killing an embryo at such a time where it is already becoming an actual baby.

Tamara, what have you read that the Judge will make you get back in the kitchen and put on an apron and take off your shoes?

Certainly one can stand against the deeply flawed house of cards of Roe v. Wade and not want to treat womyn as second-class citizen, no?
