"not a silencer" questions...

My local builder buddy has had pretty good luck building me multi purpose "accesories" in the past...

I have 2 barrel nut compensators that he built me for my Dan Wessons, & he is doing another for my new switch barrel 22 Hornet revolver project, but this one is different, the nut, looks almost like a torch tip...

these "accesories" he has built for me were designed for the main purposes ( hold the barrel on, reduce recoil ) but they were also designed to reduce the muzzle blast as percieved by the shooter... my stock TC 45-70 Hunter barrel has a muzzle blast that could knock the lights off a ceiling on an indoor range, but the "felt" muzzle blast to the shooter is a good slap on the face, that the shooter must get used to...

if the design of the new 22 Hornet "redirector" works as we expect it ( it's designed not to reduce the noise, as that would be a silencer, & not legal in my state ), but to break up the sound waves as they exit the muzzle, & redirect them away from the shooter as much as possible, as an attempt to reduce percieved muzzle blast...

I'm curious if any of you hand cannon shooters have ever found anything that works well, or if you use anything at all ???

I might have him thread one of my Contender barrels ( most likely my 375 Winchester barrel, since it's a boomer & not ported ), & have him build me another, to see how much it helps in a gun I can take it on & off...

the barrel nut Comp on my 44 Mag snubbie that he built has the port edges angled & the gun is a pleasure to shoot both as far as recoil, & muzzle blast... it'll be interesting to see how this new design works on the short barreled Hornet, & if it does well, what it could do for a real boomer like the 375 Winchester...

your guys thoughts & expiriences ???

a device redirecting muzzle blast isn't a silencer, it would be a flash suppressor and/or compensator. If the device is designed to reduce noise or does reduce noise, then it's a silencer. Don't forget, there are all kinds of legal fake "silencers" out there that effectively do the same thing that your buddy appears to be designing.

this is the same as the barrel nut compensator that is on my 44 mag snubbie... the port edges are angled away from the shooter, & seem to do a good job of redirecting the muzzle blast away from the shooter...

on this 357 max, it keeps the scope lens from getting pitted by burning powder...

the new one looks more like some of the new 22 caliber comps, that have multiple holes in the muzzle end, & are similar in looks to a multi holed torch tip

A dude I know....

Made a compensator thingy, that goes on under the barrel, paralel, like on with 2 little scope mount rings) it is an aluminium tube with a cylindrical magnet loose inside it, so it can slide backwards & forwards, with a fixed cylindrical magnet in each end so the loose magnet in the middle is pushed to the center by the fixed magnets at each end. On recoil, the loose magnet goes forward (or should I say, the barrel goes back, the middle magnet stays where it is) and cushions the recoil, then re settles in the middle again.... it sort of acts like a shock absorber.

I never tried it, but he swore by it :D He said it feels funny when the middle magnet finds center again, but seemed to arrest muzzle flip a bit (I just hold onto the sucker, myself):D
