I’m in the planning stage of next winters project. I’d like to build a Northwest Trade Musket. I don’t want to build a copy of an original musket (for example I don’t want to build a Barnett Trade Musket clone). The goal is a musket that would not look out of place on the shelf of a Hudson Bay Trading Company trading post in 1820, but not a copy of other makers work. I already have much of the hardware, but need to order a stock blank.
Can anyone tell me what the predominant stock wood was on the original muskets? My gut feel is that it was probably English Walnut, but I was hoping for some expert information.
Any trade musket experts on the forum?
Thanks to all.
